‘R.J. Decker’ Season 2 Episode 7 Finale Recap & Ending Explained: Jessica’s Threat Leaves Mel’s Family in Danger
Spoilers ahead for the full episode. ‘R.J. Decker’ has built its reputation as an offbeat South Florida crime procedural about a disgraced newspaper photographer turned private investigator, based on a character created by Carl Hiaasen. The season 2 finale, “Before You Accuse Me”, trades some of that quirkiness for something darker. It aired on ABC on October 27 and streams on Hulu the next day.
The series premiered on March 3, 2026 with 9 episodes and was renewed for a second season in May. The new run was shortened to 7 episodes, which means this hour had to close out the season quickly. Written by Juan Carlos Fernandez and directed by Michael Lehmann, it pairs a cold case with a very personal cliffhanger.
That cliffhanger is the part everyone is talking about, and it hinges on a character who has been hiding in plain sight. Here is how the case unfolds and what the ending means.
Emi (Jaina Lee Ortiz) hires R.J. (Scott Speedman) to reopen the murder of police officer Bobby Werner. Gabriel Romero was convicted and has served 10 years of a life sentence without parole. Emi believes he is innocent, and Gabriel’s lawyer, Kelly, helps R.J. question the case.
The main problem is Gabriel’s confession. He gave it while going through withdrawal during 32 hours of police questioning, and the confession was enough to sustain his conviction. R.J. also digs into the handling of evidence, which puts him at odds with Detective Mel Abreu (Bevin Bru).

Mel was a friend of Bobby’s and was on the phone with him when he was shot. She heard the gunshot while they were making weekend plans. She feels a duty to protect Bobby’s family and is determined to prove that police got it right the first time.
The tension spills over into R.J.’s romantic life too. Trudy (Shantel VanSanten) calls him out for crossing boundaries while working a case for Emi, and R.J. does not see why that is an issue. For a moment, R.J. even believes Mel might plant evidence to keep Gabriel behind bars.
The investigation turns to Bobby’s former partner, Flynn, who had a drop gun prepared. He had stolen it from his uncle’s gun locker and did not report it missing, which caused a fight with Bobby. Flynn was removed from the force a couple of months after the murder.
Trudy eventually runs prints and identifies the actual killer, but she goes to Mel rather than R.J. Mel then apologizes, admitting she could not reckon with having been lied to for a decade. The twist is that Bobby’s widow, Jessica, is the real culprit.
R.J. and Mel expose Jessica as a serial scammer who may have killed her cop husband to collect life insurance. According to one review, this was not her first marriage and the same scheme appears to have been used before. A search warrant and an expedited evidentiary hearing offer Gabriel hope of release.
The twist is also what triggers the cliffhanger. When CPS learns of the allegations, Jessica’s daughter, Danielle, is removed from her custody, and Bobby’s parents get temporary custody. In response, Jessica makes a chilling phone call to Mel, telling her she does not know who she is without her daughter and wonders who Mel will be without her own family.
The final shot reveals Jessica watching Mel’s wife, Catherine (Adelaide Clemens), and daughter, Sofia, outside their home. With Mel and R.J. all the way at a trailer park, time is not on their side. The episode ends before we learn what happens.
Bru said she was stunned when she read the script. As she tells TVLine, she still gets goosebumps just talking about the ending. She even called showrunner Rob Doherty with a rescue plan, though he vetoed her idea of using the elderly neighbor Estelle as a decoy.

ABC has not yet decided on a third season. Bru says she is hopeful, pointing to strong streaming numbers on Hulu and Disney+. The cliffhanger certainly sets up a story if the show returns.
Reaction to the finale is mixed. One critic gave it a B, calling the shortened season light and delightful but saying the ending felt tacked on and not especially thrilling. Others, including the cast, see it as a bold swing that raises the stakes.
Another open question is R.J.’s love life. He has been torn between Emi and his new connection, Trudy, and Bru, speaking as an actress, says she is on Team Emi. Whatever happens next, the final scene guarantees that any future season starts with a race against the clock.
