Spoilers ahead for the full episode. For three seasons, fans of ‘NCIS: Origins’ have wondered why Gibbs never mentioned Lala on the original series. The latest episode, “Shimmy Shimmy Ya”, finally answers that question in a quiet closing scene that recasts the entire prequel.

The episode aired on CBS on October 27 and streams on Paramount+. Written by Steven Paul Martinez and directed by Patrick Cady, it follows the show’s usual dual structure, pairing a case in the 1990s with a present-day hunt for the person who shot Gibbs. It also brings back Emily Wickersham as Ellie Bishop.

The big reveal comes at the very end, when present-day Gibbs explains Lala’s fate to Bishop. Before that, here is how both timelines play out.

In the past timeline, Gibbs is working on his boat in a shed when he catches a teenager who broke in. The kid first claims to be Kevin Montgomery, but his real name is Jack Hale, and he is the 18-year-old son of General Arthur Hale. Jack recently graduated from a military academy and has been selling fake IDs while working at a one-hour photo shop.

Jack says a rival fake ID seller threatened him, and soon someone was following him. He also hands out nicknames, calling Gibbs “Popeye”, Randy “Gingersnap”, Lala “Salma” and Franks “Moustache”. Franks refuses to sign off on an investigation at first, but the situation escalates when someone shoots up an apartment with Gibbs and Jack inside.

The team returns to Jack’s store for security footage and finds the FBI waiting. A customer named Tilly Chavez had printed photos there and was killed before she could meet FBI Special Agent Jo Swanson. NCIS and the FBI agree to form a joint task force.

Some of Tilly’s photos came out blank, but Lala recovers the images in her darkroom. They show several hands in someone’s refrigerator, and the victims are linked to the Nine Gates Brotherhood, a ruthless gang. The gang believed Jack had seen the photos, which he had not.

After a lead from an informant named Flaco, the team learns that a man named Chan was hunting Jack. When General Hale arranges for a plane to take his son to North Carolina, Jack sneaks away and lures Chan into a trap, then calls Gibbs. NCIS takes Chan down with Jack’s help, and Jack gives his money to Tilly’s family.

Jack also discovers he enjoys photography. Lala gives him one of her old cameras, and as a goodbye, he gives Gibbs a photo of Gibbs looking lovingly at Lala, with her returning the look.

In the present, Gibbs (Mark Harmon) is still recovering after being shot in the chest outside his Alaska cabin in the premiere. He has reunited with Tony DiNozzo, the new NCIS director, who sends Bishop to help. She agrees to be his partner on the quest to find out who tried to kill him, and the first step is removing the bullet and identifying it.

Reports also mention a CIA agent named Rowan who has been tracking Gibbs. Information remains limited, but the show is slowly feeding details about who is after him and why. Bishop’s return is not a one-off, since previews confirm she will remain by his side in the next episode.

While waiting for the bullet to be examined, Bishop spots the old photo and asks about the woman in it. Gibbs identifies her as Lala and says she died a long time ago in a plane crash, not in the line of duty. He also makes clear that she is not the other target of the gunmen who shot him.

That detail matters because the premiere raised the question of who the second intended target was. The reveal rules Lala out and also explains why Gibbs never spoke about her on ‘NCIS’. It was presumably too painful a memory.

It also lands hard because of where the 1990s story stands. In the Season 2 finale, Gibbs and Lala kissed, and she asked him to wait while she processed the hurt of his elopement to Diane. Some fans are still hoping Gibbs was misinformed and that Lala may somehow be alive, but the episode gives no hint of that.

Showrunner David J. North told TVLine earlier this month that “a lot will be answered this season.” The Lala reveal is the first major payoff, and it raises new questions about how and when she died. It also gives the romance in the past timeline a sense of tragedy.

Do you think ‘NCIS: Origins’ has revealed the full truth about Lala’s fate?
