Few thrillers have turned out to be as unexpected a hit as ‘The Housemaid’. Paul Feig’s adaptation of Freida McFadden’s bestselling novel arrived on December 19, 2025, opened to $19 million domestically and eventually grossed around $125 million in the US and nearly $400 million worldwide. Lionsgate, which released the R-rated thriller as counterprogramming to the holiday blockbusters, wasted little time ordering a follow-up.

That follow-up is ‘The Housemaid’s Secret‘, and it is now well into production. Sydney Sweeney returns as Millie Calloway, the ex-convict turned housekeeper, and she is also an executive producer. Feig is directing again from a script by Rebecca Sonnenshine, who adapted the first film.

The latest round of set photos shows the production continuing in New Jersey. Sweeney was photographed filming in the area on October 27 in a floral dress and a white knit cardigan, her long hair worn in loose waves. The setting included a red-framed doorway and a jack-o’-lantern on the stoop, a seasonal touch that fits the film’s late-year production schedule.

Over the past few weeks, set photos have steadily revealed who is joining Sweeney. On October 14, she was photographed in Hoboken with Michele Morrone, who returns as Enzo, Nina’s groundskeeper and confidant. A day later, she was seen alongside newcomer Stephen Kalyn, who plays her love interest Brock Cunningham.

On October 26, Sweeney and new cast member Kirsten Dunst were spotted filming a scene together in a car in Jersey City, sharing a laugh between takes. Brittany Snow and Paul Anthony Kelly are also part of the new ensemble and have been photographed filming together on a city street lined with brownstone-style stoops. Lionsgate confirmed that filming had started with a behind-the-scenes video showing Sweeney hugging Dunst, followed by Feig and the newcomers dancing in costume.

The sequel picks up with Millie taking a new housekeeping job for a woman she is never allowed to see. She then discovers the truth behind a locked door, which threatens to expose secrets far darker than she expected. The film is based on McFadden’s 2023 follow-up novel.

Amanda Seyfried’s Nina and Brandon Sklenar’s Andrew will not return as regular characters, since the latter met a fatal end in the first film. Seyfried has said she would almost guarantee a small cameo, and that she would happily step back into the role. Whether that happens is still unconfirmed.

Lionsgate has made no secret of its ambitions. The studio has said it hopes to turn ‘The Housemaid’ into a major franchise, and a third McFadden novel, ‘The Housemaid Is Watching’, remains available for future adaptation. The first film’s success on a reported $35 million budget made that plan easy to justify.

Behind the scenes, producers include Todd Lieberman of Hidden Pictures, Feig and Laura Fischer of Pretty Dangerous Pictures, and Sweeney through her Fifty-Fifty Films banner. That level of involvement from Sweeney shows how central she has become to the series. It also marks another step in a busy period for the actress.

‘The Housemaid’s Secret’ is scheduled to open on December 17, 2027, exactly 2 years after the first film’s debut. It will land on the same day as ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ and ‘Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’, both from male-skewing franchises. Lionsgate is clearly betting that the same counterprogramming strategy will work again.

The first film also found renewed popularity on streaming, which should help build awareness over the next year. With production moving steadily and the ensemble coming into focus, the sequel looks well positioned. For now, the New Jersey set photos are the main way fans can follow along.
