‘Extraction 3’ Reaches the Finish Line With a Stacked Cast and a Globe-Trotting Shoot
Tyler Rake has never been an easy man to keep down. The original ‘Extraction’ debuted on Netflix in 2020 and became one of the streaming platform’s biggest film releases at the time, and a sequel followed in 2023.
Since then, fans have been waiting to see where the Australian mercenary goes next. The films are based on the graphic novel Ciudad by Ande Parks and illustrator Fernando Leon Gonzalez, and Sam Hargrave, who directed the first two, is returning to direct the third installment.
Now there is fresh word from the set. Culture Crave shared on X that ‘Extraction 3’ has wrapped filming, noting that Chris Hemsworth, Idris Elba, Pierce Brosnan, Golshifteh Farahani and Don Lee star in the film. The post pulled in 87.8K views, 5.5K likes and 426 reposts.
The milestone appears to line up with other reports. Screen Rant and MovieWeb report that Hemsworth announced the wrap on Instagram, and the shoot reportedly ran about 4 months across Europe, Sydney and Southeast Asia. Screen Rant also describes images from Thailand.
That is a fairly quick turnaround from the start of production. Hemsworth closed his deal to return in April 2026, and cameras were rolling in Australia about 4 months later. Hemsworth confirmed on social media in July that production had kicked off, with Hargrave describing the film as the franchise’s biggest swing yet.
The Australian setting was a homecoming of sorts for the star. Production on the New South Wales South Coast was expected to create 450 local jobs and contribute an estimated USD 127 million to the state’s screen industry and broader economy. Filming took place across Sydney, the NSW South Coast and parts of Europe.
The cast is where this installment really stands out. Hemsworth returns as Tyler Rake, alongside Elba as Alcott and Farahani as Tyler’s partner, Nik Khan. Brosnan is among five new cast members, joined by Don Lee, Joe Taslim, Chi Lewis-Parry and Siena Agudong.
Brosnan’s casting grabbed much of the attention. Deadline broke the news on August 17, 2026, and he wore the James Bond tuxedo 4 times between ‘GoldenEye’ and ‘Die Another Day’. Don’t expect a 007 cameo, though, as Brosnan is joining the franchise as a new character, and details about his role have not been revealed.
Lee’s involvement adds another layer. He signed on to star in ‘Tygo’, a Korean-language entry in the ‘Extraction’ franchise centered on his former child soldier turned mercenary character, which is currently in post-production. His casting is expected to be a crossover element, which hints that Netflix is building a wider universe around Rake.
Story details remain locked down. The roles for the new cast members are being kept under wraps, and plot details have not been disclosed. David Weil wrote the screenplay, based on a story by Ande Parks, Joe Russo and Anthony Russo.
As for when audiences might see it, nothing is official yet. Netflix has not announced a release date for ‘Extraction 3’, though one report points to a summer 2027 release. For comparison, ‘Extraction 2’ wrapped filming in March 2022 and reached Netflix in June 2023, a 15-month turnaround.
If that timeline holds, post-production is likely to take up most of the next year. For now, the cameras have stopped rolling on Rake’s biggest mission yet, and fans are left waiting for a first trailer.
