‘Abbott Elementary’ Season 6 Episode 4 Halloween Episode Recap and Ending Explained: Gregory’s Ring Run Spirals Into a Cheating-and-Murder Scare
In an age when network comedies rarely build entire episodes around the holidays, ‘Abbott Elementary’ still treats seasonal episodes like a lost art worth preserving. This year’s Halloween episode delivers costumes, party chaos and a plot that keeps its biggest moment for the final stretch. The Halloween episode ending is the part fans are already dissecting, so here is how it all played out.
The episode, titled “Halloween Party,” aired on October 28 on ABC, with the network slot at 8:30 p.m. ET. Joya McCroy wrote it, and it is part of a 22-episode season that began on October 7. New episodes land on Hulu the day after they air.
To understand why the finale hits the way it does, you have to remember where the season started. Gregory entered the season as the school’s new assistant principal, after being promoted at the end of the previous season. The premiere then revealed that Ava already knew about his plan to propose to Janine, because her boyfriend O’Shon had connected Gregory with a local jeweler.
The staff showed up in full Halloween spirit, and many of them channeled cartoons. Gregory and Jacob dressed as characters from ‘Hey Arnold!’, Melissa wore one half of a ‘Toy Story’ couple’s costume, and Janine went as Susie Carmichael from ‘Rugrats’. The plan was for everyone to head to Ava’s secret party after school.
Gregory had other plans. He slipped away to shop for the perfect ring for Janine, and the trip took him to a nearly empty strip mall outside the city. The saleswoman, played by Edi Patterson, couldn’t read the room, and one misstep after another dragged out his visit. She even resisted simply taking his money for the ring.
Back at school, Gregory’s absence set off alarm bells. Janine and Jacob were fresh off a true crime kick, and when Janine noticed his location hadn’t moved, she called him and overheard the saleswoman say something that made her think he was cheating. Between them, the pair became convinced he was either having an affair or was a serial killer.
When Gregory finally arrived at the party, he faced accusations of both murder and infidelity. He asked Janine to trust him, said he couldn’t reveal where he had been, and quietly set Jacob straight so the surprise wouldn’t be spoiled. Janine then decided their history justified her faith in him and told him she supported whatever his mysterious plan was, which flips a familiar sitcom cliché on its head.

The secret didn’t survive the night. Janine went to Ava with a completely wrong guess, believing Gregory was planning to get them a puppy. Ava assumed Janine had figured out the proposal and let the truth slip.
Janine learned what Gregory’s secret side quest really was, and she looked thrilled about it. That is the heart of the ending: the surprise is gone, but the moment is clearly headed somewhere happy. The question that now hangs over the season is when Gregory will actually pop the question.
While the engagement drama unfolded, Ava was busy with her own mission. Her goal was a perfectly curated ‘Grown and Sexy’ Halloween party, which her colleagues threw into disarray, or possibly rescued. She bluntly told Janine she wasn’t invited because she wasn’t cool enough, and Janine wasn’t sure whether Ava was serious.
The best twist is that the teachers ended up fitting in at Ava’s event after all. Barbara and Melissa held court among Ava’s friends, explaining their strategies for building lasting romantic relationships. It is a lesson Ava keeps having to relearn about appreciating her corny coworkers.

The reveal lands at a good moment. The series reaches its 100th episode during this season, with the milestone arriving in episode 7, and that landmark installment was filmed at Disneyland. With Janine now aware of the plan, the writers have plenty of room to play with anticipation instead of secrecy.
Critics have also been kind to the episode’s tone. Screen Rant described the ring subplot as stressful but hilarious, with a happy ending that suits it. That mix of anxiety and sweetness is exactly what makes the Janine and Gregory storyline work.
Should Gregory still surprise Janine with a proposal?
