Sauron is the most famous villain in fantasy, yet ‘The Rings of Power’ has spent two seasons keeping him hidden. First he was Halbrand, a charming wanderer, and then the golden-tongued Annatar. The prequel series is now ready to show the version audiences have waited for, and the ‘Rings of Power’ Sauron of season 3 looks very different.

Season 2 ended with Sauron’s scheme in full swing and Fëanor’s hammer in his hands. The new season picks up five years after the fall of Eregion, with his armies having marched across the world. Only a few isolated realms still stand against him, including Khazad-dûm and the elven realms of Lindon and Rivendell.

During a set visit, showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay explained how they describe the character this season. They told Nerdist that the team refers to him as “Full-Metal Sauron.” For two seasons, he operated in the shadows, but now he is no longer pretending to be Halbrand or Annatar.

Instead, he is the figure in black leather ruling from the great dark tower of Barad-dûr, where he is making the One Ring. Payne added that audiences will watch him sink to evil levels the show hasn’t reached before.

The design team clearly took the name seriously. Sauron will have a sword of his own for the first time, and its metals and shapes also form his dagger. The weaponry nods to his crown, as the artists tried to merge the symbolism into one look that makes sense for the Dark Lord.

His throne is also a statement, as it contains the melted helmets of elven warriors that Sauron has defeated. The set visit also revealed that artisans made torture devices for him, which underscores how far the show is going to show his cruelty.

Not everything is straightforward for him, though. Payne has said the season centers on Sauron’s growing self-doubt and the struggle to forge the One Ring. What he did to Celebrimbor is also set to come back to haunt him, which suggests the road to the Ring isn’t a smooth one.

Charlie Vickers, who plays Sauron, sees each earlier version as the character being fully himself, just committed to a different disguise. That take fits a villain who has always been the same figure, only wearing masks to get what he wants.

The trailer shows Sauron heading to Mount Doom to create the One Ring. It also shows him facing a Balrog, wearing the Ring and gathering his dark army, and it closes on the ring’s scripture blazing to life on the band. Meanwhile, Gandalf, played by Daniel Weyman, offers encouragement and says they can turn the tide.

The cast includes Morfydd Clark as Galadriel and Robert Aramayo as Elrond, with ‘Stranger Things’ alum Jamie Campbell Bower joining as Celeborn. Eddie Marsan appears as Thrain, Andrew Richardson as Anarion and Adam Young as the original orc character Marnûkh. The season will also explore the origins of the Nazgûl, and there will be no Harfoots.

The eight-episode season arrives on Prime Video on Wednesday, November 11, with four episodes releasing on premiere day. Episodes 5 and 6 follow on November 18, and the final pair arrives on November 25. That is a very different rollout from the weekly releases of the first two seasons, and it means the whole story will be available before Thanksgiving.

The earlier seasons set up the stakes. Season 2 was Amazon’s most-watched returning season on Prime Video, and audience reaction was more positive than for the first season. That gives season 3 a solid foundation as it moves toward the forging of the One Ring.

Fans of Tolkien know where the story must go, and the show has been building to the point where Sauron stops hiding. By dropping the disguises, the series can finally deliver the menace and spectacle that the Dark Lord promises. It is a bold change in tone, and the showrunners are betting that a villain who is open about his power is more frightening than one who hides it.
