Walton Goggins Takes Off the Ghoul Makeup for the Last Time on the New Season of ‘Fallout’ in an Emotional Farewell
Few actors disappear into a role the way Walton Goggins does as the Ghoul. ‘Fallout‘ turned the scarred, noseless gunslinger into one of the breakout characters of the streaming era, and every time cameras roll on a new season, fans watch for signs of how the production is going. Now the actor has offered a heartfelt hint about where things stand, and his ‘Fallout’ season 3 wrap is the latest piece of news from the wasteland.
The Prime Video series is adapted from Bethesda’s game franchise and created by Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet. It premiered on April 10, 2024, and returned for a second season on December 16, 2025, with the remaining episodes arriving weekly through February 3, 2026. Prime Video renewed it for a third season in May 2025, before season 2 even premiered.
Goggins has shared a video on Instagram marking the end of his work on the third season. In the post, he wrote that he took the makeup off for the last time this season, that it felt good, and that he wished the road and the song would never end. He added that he is going to miss California until the next time.
The clip shows him driving with the top down in sunglasses, his hair blowing in the breeze, a very different look from the scarred Cooper Howard fans know. The contrast is part of the appeal, with the actor visibly relaxed after what is clearly a long shoot.
It’s worth being precise about what the post confirms. Goggins is saying that his own work on the season is finished, and the post doesn’t state that the entire production has wrapped. One recent report noted that cameras were still rolling as of early October, so other cast members may still be filming.
That is typical for a show with a large ensemble. Principal actors often finish at different times, particularly when storylines split across multiple locations and characters.
Transforming into the Ghoul is no small task. Goggins has said the process takes just over two hours, and that he uses the time to catch up with the makeup team, watch a Western and then listen to an Ennio Morricone soundtrack to get still and quiet. That ritual helps explain why taking the makeup off for the last time carries emotional weight.
He also marked the end of season 2 in a memorable way, posting a video of himself tearing the Ghoul makeup off. This new farewell feels more reflective, which fits a show that spent its second season giving Cooper Howard a deeper emotional arc.
Filming began in Los Angeles this summer, and Goggins announced his return with a makeup-chair photo captioned “Back in the saddle”. The images also showed the Ghoul’s signature boots and scorpion belt buckle. Prime Video’s June update confirmed that production was starting and revealed the new cast.
Aaron Paul, Emily Mortimer, Manny Jacinto and Thomasin McKenzie are joining the show. Annabel O’Hagan and Dave Register have been upped to series regulars. Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten, Kyle MacLachlan and Moisés Arias are all returning.

The season 2 finale left the Ghoul alive and heading off to find his family, which sets up his story for the new episodes. His partnership with Purnell’s Lucy MacLean has been central to the show’s appeal, and fans are eager to see how the two paths cross again. Details are being kept tightly under wraps.
The show has been praised for its performances, visuals and production design, with critics saying season 2 continued to build on that strong foundation. That raises expectations for the third season.
Prime Video hasn’t announced a release date, and no trailer has dropped. Observers expect the season to arrive in 2027, and showrunner Jonathan Nolan has said the team wants to avoid making the wait too long. It will stream exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories.
Until more official details arrive, social posts like Goggins’ farewell are the best glimpse of the production’s progress. They also show how much the cast cares about the world.
The phrase “until the next time” suggests Goggins sees this as a pause rather than a goodbye. With the Ghoul’s story still unfinished, that optimism seems well placed. For now, fans will have to wait for the wasteland to reopen.
