New Look at Doctor Doom With the Latverian Witches in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Revealed
Doctor Doom has never been a ruler who stands alone. In Marvel Comics, Latveria is a land steeped in both advanced technology and old magic, and its monarch has always mixed science with sorcery. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has been building that image for months, and the latest Doctor Doom Latverian Witches poster puts the mystery of his followers back in the spotlight.
The new artwork shows Robert Downey Jr.’s Doom in his hood and green cloak, with a chain across his chest and a gauntlet at his side. He stands in front of tall green stained-glass windows, flanked by robed, masked figures in purple, orange and green. The ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ logo sits at the bottom, and the film arrives on December 18.
The honest answer is that Marvel hasn’t said. The studio has confirmed the witches exist, first through costumes labeled “Latverian Witch” at San Diego Comic-Con in July, then through a poster at Comic-Con Málaga and footage in which they kneel before Doom on a tower. But it hasn’t named a single one of them or the actresses playing them.
Their colors have shifted slightly between reveals. At Comic-Con, one costume was yellow or gold, while a poster showed a witch in red, and the latest image shows an orange-red hood. Every face remains hidden behind a cold metal mask.

Fan speculation has filled the gap. The most popular guesses go by color, with red pinned on Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff, green on Sophia Di Martino’s Sylvie, and purple on either Charlize Theron’s Clea or Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness. Another idea is that the witches are variants of familiar heroes forced into Doom’s service.
None of that is confirmed, and Marvel has a reputation for guarding secrets. It’s also possible the witches are entirely new characters, which would fit Doom’s comic-book roots.
One theory has gained traction since Sandra Hüller’s name appeared in a British stunt registry listing for the film. Her role is unannounced, but fans have speculated she could be playing Doom’s mother, Cynthia von Doom, or one of the witches. In the comics, Cynthia is a Romani witch who struck a deal with Mephisto and lost her soul.
That would help explain the sorcery side of Doom’s character. The film’s marketing has also shown a tapestry depicting a woman and a child, and fans have connected that image to the idea that his origin story will play a part. Again, this is speculation, and the studio hasn’t confirmed any of it.
Marvel’s official description calls Victor Von Doom the monarch of Latveria and a master of both sorcery and technology, with an impenetrable mask hiding who he really is. The Russo brothers have also said that Doom’s magical side and the witches are a major part of the story. That puts the coven at the center rather than the edges.
It also fits how Doom has been presented in the footage. In the Comic-Con special look, he catches Thor’s hammer, throws him aside and raises an army of Sentinels, and the witches appear to serve as his inner circle. The visuals suggest a ruler who commands both machines and mystic forces.

The new poster follows several others that have centered the villain, including the first ‘Team Doom’ poster, which showed him in his throne room with the three witches on the staircase. At least 25 pieces of artwork have surfaced, and the green stained-glass look has become a signature of the campaign. Each one adds a new layer to the mystery.
The witches are part of that. They give fans something to decode, which keeps the conversation going between trailers.
With about seven weeks until release, a final trailer is expected in mid-November. It could offer a clearer look at the witches, or it could deepen the mystery. Either way, the premium-format posters and merchandise suggest Marvel plans to keep the focus on Doom and his court.
For now, the safest conclusion is that the witches are important, masked and unidentified. The rest is a guessing game.
Who do you think the Latverian Witches really are?
