The mole hunt may be over, but the squad’s problems in ‘S.W.A.T. Exiles‘ are far from finished. With Malik already exposed as the leak, the latest installment on Starz turns inward, asking how well Hondo’s misfit team really knows one another.

‘Hate Crime’, which arrived on October 30, is the show’s most character-driven hour yet. It puts one recruit under the microscope and shows how quickly a team built on second chances can start to crack.

That recruit is Jude. His secret history as a deep-cover operative comes crashing into the present, and the fallout leaves the squad divided over whether they can still trust the man fighting beside them.

The trouble starts in a diner, where a woman who knows Jude as “Bobby” tells him she’s pregnant. Moments later, Shane, his old associate from the undercover days, shows up with a new job and wants Bobby back.

Jude isn’t technically undercover anymore, but he doesn’t want to blow his old cover, so he reluctantly agrees. During the break-in, a security guard intervenes and Shane moves to kill him. Jude steps in and beats the guard instead, which saves the man’s life but gets Jude’s mask pulled off on camera.

It turns out the FBI needs Jude anyway. Hondo is called into the commander’s office, where an FBI agent wants Jude to infiltrate the white supremacist crew he once pretended to belong to, a group targeting Black-owned businesses.

Hondo objects but insists S.W.A.T. back Jude up, and the agency reluctantly agrees. Jude goes back under as Bobby, and the squad watches the footage of what he did to keep his cover intact.

The reaction is brutal. Malik, Ethan and Cassidy are all unsettled, and Sammy takes it hardest. She has been involved with Jude, and she struggles to reconcile that with the racist persona he played so convincingly.

The trust issues spread beyond Jude. Ethan is still wrestling with Malik’s betrayal, and Malik offers to resign again, but Hondo refuses and pushes him to stay and help find whoever is coming after them. Hondo also tells the commander that Jude should be pulled from the team once the mission wraps.

Hondo visits Shane’s father, Ray, in prison and picks up a useful lead, but he also learns that Jude’s cover has been blown. There’s no time to warn him. Jude sets off an alarm to signal the team, Shane flushes him out, and just as it looks like he may be killed, S.W.A.T. arrives and takes down the hate group.

Jude survives, though the cost is steep. His teammates now see him differently, and his relationship with Sammy appears broken. Executive producer Jason Ning and star Ronen Rubinstein have said the episode pushes Jude to a breaking point, and the hour makes clear how heavily playing Bobby weighed on him.

The final scene is the most revealing. Jude goes to Hondo’s house, admits he has lost the team’s trust, says he’s ashamed of what he did, and suggests he should leave. Hondo, who had planned to remove him, changes his mind. He tells Jude to stay, but makes clear he will have to earn that trust back from everyone, and warns him never to do it again.

The scene lands because it ties back to Hondo’s own history. He mentions that his father was a Black Panther, a reminder of how personal sitting across from that kind of hatred was for him. Choosing second chances over easy exits is also exactly what this show has promised from the start.

The big overarching threat, the person at City Hall working against Hondo, is still waiting in the wings. This episode instead gives the squad something harder to fight, which is distrust from within.

Reviewers have praised Rubinstein’s breakdown scene and Lucy Barrett’s work as Sammy, and the mix of action and emotional fallout may be the show’s strongest formula yet. With the season heading into its final stretch, the question is whether a fractured team can pull together before the next attack.

Was Hondo right to give Jude another chance and keep him on the team?
