Robert Downey Jr. Turns Doctor Doom Into a Trick-or-Treater in a Playful Halloween Post

Halloween has become an unofficial holiday for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with studios, actors and fans using the spooky season to tease what’s coming. This year, the Doctor Doom Halloween mood arrives courtesy of the man under the mask. It’s a lighthearted note in a campaign that has so far leaned heavily on mystery and menace.

Marvel’s marketing for its next Avengers movie has been unusually guarded. The Russo brothers have a reputation for protecting major details, and the studio has handed out its clues in small, carefully timed portions. That makes any new image, even a jokey one, a small event for fans trying to read the tea leaves.

The newest piece of that puzzle is a cartoon-style illustration that Robert Downey Jr. shared for Halloween. It shows Doctor Doom in his green hood and metal mask, standing on a doorstep with three hooded Latverian Witches in lime green, purple and yellow. Each of them clutches a paper trick-or-treat bag, and an orange, rocky hand reaches out of the doorway holding a bowl of candy.

The joke lands in the speech bubble. Doom, holding a piece of rocky orange candy in his hand, mutters “I got a rock…”, a pointed gag since the hand dishing out the treats belongs to The Thing. The image turns Marvel’s most imposing new villain into a kid on Halloween night, and it casually confirms that Ben Grimm’s rocky character is part of the fun.

The witches in the illustration are the real draw. Marvel first showed off their costumes at San Diego Comic-Con in July, and fans have been guessing about who is under the masks ever since. Popular theories have pointed to Scarlet Witch, Clea or Sylvie, though none has been confirmed.

The mystery got another push when a reported international poster surfaced ahead of San Diego Comic-Con Málaga, showing Doom on his throne with three masked witches on the stairs. Outlets noted that it was notable for spotlighting characters who haven’t been officially cast. More recently, a report claimed that Sandra Hüller might be involved, though that is also unverified, and some fans have argued the witches may simply be new characters.

That’s what makes a Halloween gag more than a throwaway. Downey and Marvel are reminding audiences that Doom’s coven exists, without offering a single real clue about who they are.

Downey’s return to the MCU has been one of the most talked-about stories in the franchise since he revealed it at Comic-Con in 2024, when he said “New mask, same task.” Instead of playing Tony Stark again, he is Victor von Doom in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, which the Russo brothers are directing. Stephen McFeely wrote the screenplay.

Fan reaction to the character has not been uniform. Doom’s heavy Latverian accent in a recent trailer divided viewers, with some comparing it to a bad Dracula impression. The Russos have said that Downey surprised them with the voice one day while they were discussing the character’s details, and Joe Russo said it gave him chills, comparing it to a memorable Tony Stark moment from ‘Avengers: Endgame’.

Marvel has also built an unusual amount of scale around the villain. The trailers have confirmed that Doom will command a group of mutant-hunting Sentinels, and the cast list is enormous, stretching from Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston and Florence Pugh to Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart. Ebon Moss-Bachrach is returning as Ben Grimm, which explains the rocky cameo in the Halloween image.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ opens in theaters on December 18. Between the posters, the trailers and now a trick-or-treat joke, Marvel seems determined to keep Doom at the center of the conversation until then.

Most of the footage so far has presented Doom as a towering, dangerous figure, so it’s refreshing to see him placed in a goofy suburban scene. The image works because it preserves the character’s look, the mask and the green hood, while undercutting his menace with a children’s-holiday setup. It also gives the witches a visual identity that fans can latch onto as the release date nears.

It’s a small moment, but in a campaign built on secrecy, even a Halloween joke gives fans something new to pick apart. Whoever is under those hoods, they are clearly part of Doom’s inner circle, and Marvel seems happy to let that mystery linger.

Who do you think is hiding under the masks of Doctor Doom’s three Latverian Witches in Avengers: Doomsday?
