Fan encounters come in all shapes, from sweet convention hugs to awkward grocery store stares. For an actor tied to one of the biggest franchises in history, they come with the territory. Few stories, though, can match the strangest fan encounter Hayden Christensen has shared.

The Anakin Skywalker star turned up at L.A. Comic Con on the eve of Halloween, wearing a ball cap and hoodie and joking about how bright the room was. Over a panel that ran about 45 minutes, he looked back on more than two decades of ‘Star Wars’ fandom. Along the way, he dropped a tale that sounds more like a movie plot than a real-life anecdote.

Asked about his strangest fan encounter, Christensen said he was once recognized by the man robbing his house, according to The Nerd Wire’s report from the panel. Years ago, he explained, he was home on a phone call waiting for a friend when the front door opened and footsteps headed upstairs. Assuming it was his friend messing around, he got up, did a sort of loop around a walk-around fireplace with the intruder and then sat back down to finish his call.

When he finally went to surprise his supposed friend, he found a stranger holding an armful of his belongings. He first wondered if the man was a delivery guy, then realized that all of it was his own stuff. The man recognized him immediately and began apologizing, handing the items back and explaining that he had fallen on hard times and was trying to raise money for a ticket home.

Instead of calling for help, Christensen offered to drive the man to the train station the next day and buy the ticket. He also took him upstairs and gave him some clothes and a pair of shoes, since the man said he couldn’t get a job without something decent to wear. The man never came back for the ride.

Christensen ended the story with a joke to the crowd, asking people not to try burglarizing his house again and noting that he has great security cameras. The story drew laughs, and it says plenty about how the actor handles the unexpected. It also shows how widely recognizable he remains after all these years.

The burglary tale was only one highlight. Christensen recalled being 19 and asleep in a Vancouver apartment when his agents and manager all called at once, a moment he described as the best phone call of his life. He said he immediately told his roommate, and the two celebrated by dancing around the apartment before he was flown to Australia a few weeks later.

On his first day on the set of ‘Attack of the Clones’, he walked up to George Lucas in costume and thanked him, and he kept doing it at the end of every day. The one note he carried from Lucas was that Anakin always believes he’s doing the right thing, since a villain never sees himself as the villain. That idea became the throughline for his performance across both films.

Christensen also shared a family detail that drew sympathetic laughs. His daughter knows that her dad plays Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader but isn’t interested in watching, and he thinks it may be because she doesn’t want to see him as an evil character. He held off showing her the films when she was younger to preserve the experience, and by the time he felt she was ready, she had lost interest.

She did watch part of the theatrical re-release of ‘Revenge of the Sith’, but he said he rushed out with her before the scene in which he beheads Count Dooku. On the long-running debate over viewing order, he refused to pick a side, saying there’s no right or wrong way. He also said he hoped to take her trick-or-treating the next day, noting that he plays dress-up for a living.

Asked which non-‘Star Wars’ role he’d return to at his current age, Christensen chose David Rice from 2008’s ‘Jumper’, which drew loud cheers. He said the cast thought they’d make more of those films and teased that it’s possible one day, although he cautioned fans not to hold their breath. He added that teleportation would be his superpower of choice, and he called 2001’s ‘Life as a House’ the most personal role of his career.

Christensen returned as Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader in ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ in 2022 and again in ‘Ahsoka’ in 2023. He’s set to appear in the second season of ‘Ahsoka’, which is slated to premiere on January 20, 2027. He has said in the past that he would love to keep playing the role if Lucasfilm calls.

The panel offered a reminder that his bond with the franchise remains both personal and playful. From a front-door surprise to a daughter’s strong feelings about Vader, the stories made him feel like a fan who got lucky rather than a distant movie star.
