‘Tracker’ Season 4 Episode 5 Recap & Ending Explained: Why Russell’s Return Doesn’t Answer Colter’s Biggest Question
Colter Shaw has spent a lot of time chasing missing people, but lately the hardest person for him to find has been his own brother. When Russell finally resurfaces, the ‘Tracker‘ ending serves up a rescue, a corporate scandal and a very big question mark. The episode, “Need to Know,” aired on CBS on November 1.
Jensen Ackles’ return as Russell had been teased for weeks, and the premise promised a team-up: a kidnapped family and a cover-up that pulls both Shaw brothers in. Season 3 ended on May 24 with Russell slipping away after destroying a secret file about Colter, and Colter has been left in the dark ever since. Season 4 has kept that mystery simmering under its weekly cases.
Russell doesn’t reach out to explain where he has been. He calls Colter with a case, which is about as Russell as it gets. Grant Valko, a military contractor just back from a six-month overseas deployment, comes home to find his wife, Shaina, and daughter, Ellie, have been kidnapped.
The kidnappers want Grant to retract his after-action report about an explosion during a mission he believed was escorting medical supplies. They give him 48 hours, though he has no guarantee that complying would bring his family back. Colter finds a hidden surveillance device at the house, follows scratches and paint along the abduction route, and eventually finds a child’s bunny pin in the van.
While Colter works the scene, Russell is tracking John Hawthorne, Grant’s spotter, who had already agreed to retract his own report. Hawthorne is thrown from a building and dies, and the assassin, Caswell, escapes after a rooftop chase that ends with Colter barely making a jump.
The case then widens. The cargo in that mission was actually proprietary weapons technology, and the explosion exposed a malfunction in a valuable program. Randy traces a payment promised to Hawthorne back to Gordon Marsh, an executive at RossKelly Defense Systems, and the fact that Hawthorne was killed before the money cleared shows that cooperating wouldn’t have kept anyone safe.

Colter takes Gordon by force and gets the location of a ranch after a fight in an elevator. At the ranch, Caswell captures Grant, so Russell gets Shaina and Ellie toward the vehicle while Colter confronts Caswell. Russell creates a diversion, Colter shoots Caswell, and Grant is reunited with his family.
The retraction is never filed, so Grant’s original report stands. Reenie passes the information to the authorities, which clears Grant and keeps Russell’s name out of the reports. RossKelly is set to face accountability, although the episode doesn’t spell out every consequence. Ellie later thanks Colter with a small gift, a nice beat for a series that likes its hero a little gruff.

The most interesting tension comes after the credits-worthy action. Rather than vanishing again, Russell agrees to spend time with Colter over a few beers. It’s a small gesture, but for a character with a habit of leaving, it signals that he cares about repairing something.
What he doesn’t do is explain the file about Colter or the arrangement he accepted at the end of Season 3. The episode proves Russell can be trusted in a crisis, but it also makes clear he’s still holding back. For Colter, it’s business as usual, even though viewers know better.
There’s also a lighter note. Reenie is visibly relieved to see Russell and is more interested in whether he’s okay than in hearing his excuses. Before the episode ends, she asks him to pick a dinner date, and he suggests the following week.
The dinner isn’t shown, and the two aren’t confirmed as a couple. Still, it gives Russell something to come back for, which matters if the show wants him around longer. Reports from the production side suggest the team hopes to have Ackles back for more episodes later in the season.
Don’t expect a quick follow-up. There is no new episode on November 8, the first hiatus of the season, and the series returns on November 15 with “Blind Spot.” CBS ordered 22 episodes for the season, so there is plenty of room for the Shaw family mystery to unfold at its own pace.
Do you think Russell will finally reveal the truth about the mysterious file involving Colter?
