‘The Hunger Games’ Star Jennifer Lawrence Brings Back Katniss Everdeen’s Iconic 3-Finger Salute on the Streets of New York
Some gestures belong to a movie franchise forever. In ‘The Hunger Games‘, a simple raised hand became a silent symbol of solidarity and resistance against the Capitol, and it has outlived the films that made it famous.
That symbol is back in the spotlight as the franchise prepares to return to theaters with a new prequel. Jennifer Lawrence, who played Katniss Everdeen across the original 4 films, is also set to appear again as the character.
Now Lawrence has given fans a very Katniss moment in real life. A video captured in New York City shows the actress walking down a sidewalk and flashing the salute, a gesture that quickly caught fans’ attention online.

The clip was filmed on Tuesday morning, Nov. 3, as Lawrence walked around the city. The 36-year-old Oscar winner wore an oversized graphic tee, a blue coat and red pants, and her hair was in a braid, the signature hairstyle of her character.
The photographer who captured the moment also praised Lawrence for being friendly and approachable during the encounter. The brief interaction is part of a larger wave of buzz around the franchise as its newest film nears release.
Lawrence’s playful nod to Katniss has the feel of a small Easter egg for fans who have waited years to see her back in the world of Panem.
The sighting came on Election Day, and Lawrence made use of the salute in a more deliberate way online. She shared a photo of herself doing the gesture on her Instagram Story, with a caption nodding to a line from ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1’ and a link to Vote.org.
Her post encouraged her followers to vote, and she stopped short of endorsing any candidates. She has more than 8.7 million Instagram followers, and she only joined the platform in September, after years without a public social media presence.
Her Instagram debut was a hit in its own right, with her first video post collecting more than 2.3 million likes in less than 24 hours. She joked at the time that negative comments could send her straight back off the platform.
The move is also notable because Lawrence has said she tends to avoid political talk in interviews. Here, the franchise reference let her encourage turnout without taking a side.

Lawrence has recently confirmed that she is returning as Katniss, alongside Josh Hutcherson as Peeta Mellark and Woody Harrelson as Haymitch Abernathy. The scenes are presumably adapting the epilogue of the book, though the details remain under wraps.
She has described reprising the role after 11 years as unbelievable. For a character who became one of her most recognizable performances and helped make her a major Hollywood star, the reunion carries real emotional weight.
The role first arrived in 2012, with Katniss volunteering to take her younger sister Primrose’s place in the Games. She entered the competition alongside Peeta, and across 4 films she became the face of the rebellion, which is why the salute still carries so much meaning for fans.
The new film is ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’, which revisits Panem 24 years before the events of the original story. It follows 16-year-old Haymitch Abernathy from District 12 on the morning of the reaping for the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell.
Joseph Zada plays young Haymitch in a cast that also includes Ralph Fiennes as President Snow, Elle Fanning as Effie Trinket and Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee. Francis Lawrence directs from a screenplay by Billy Ray and Michael Lesslie, with Maya Hawke and Kelvin Harrison Jr. rounding out the ensemble.
The film opens in theaters on Nov. 20. With the marketing campaign already pulling fans deeper into Panem, Lawrence’s salute on a New York sidewalk feels like a fitting warm-up.
