Keanu Reeves Makes a Surprising ‘John Wick’ Return Official

Few action franchises have been as stubborn about letting their hero rest as ‘John Wick’. The series kicked off in 2014, and its star has spent the years since turning a grieving ex-hitman into a pop culture fixture. Wick’s “death” in the last film was ambiguous enough that his return always seemed likely.

Lionsgate has spent the last year stacking up plans for the franchise. At CinemaCon 2025, the studio announced ‘John Wick 5’, an animated prequel and a Caine spinoff directed by Donnie Yen. The animated project was the one that sparked the most curiosity, mostly because nobody quite knew when it would move from tease to reality.

That wait now appears to be over. Variety reports that Keanu Reeves has officially closed a deal to return as John Wick in Lionsgate’s animated prequel movie about the legendary hitman. The trade’s headline says Reeves “officially sets” his return, which turns a long-rumored voice role into a done deal.

The timing lines up with other coverage this week. Gizmodo reported on Nov. 5 that Lionsgate has greenlit the previously teased animated prequel, which Reeves will produce and lend his voice to. So Reeves is not just a hired voice here, as he also has a hand in shaping the project behind the scenes.

The story itself goes back to the franchise’s most mythologized moment. The movie tells the story of John Wick before the events of the first film as he completes the Impossible Task, namely the killing of all his rivals in one night. The goal of that mission was to free himself from his obligation to the High Table and earn the right to be with the love of his life, Helen.

Fans have been asking for this exact story for years, and the studio knows it. Lionsgate chair Adam Fogelson has said no John Wick story is more in demand among fans than the Impossible Task. It is a tale the films only hinted at, which makes it a natural fit for a prequel.

Animation also gives the filmmakers room to play with the franchise’s stylized violence. Like the live-action films, the animated movie is meant to deliver the highly stylized action fans expect and is aimed at more mature audiences. That should reassure anyone worried that a cartoon version would soften the brutal gun-fu.

The creative team looks strong on paper. Shannon Tindle, known for ‘Ultraman: Rising’, is directing for Lionsgate, while Vanessa Taylor of ‘The Shape of Water’ is writing. Longtime producer Chad Stahelski is also behind the project.

Producers include Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, Stahelski and Reeves, with 87Eleven Entertainment’s Alex Young and Jason Spitz serving as executive producers. That keeps the core ‘John Wick’ brain trust involved, which should help the animated film feel like part of the same world rather than a spinoff in name only.

This is also only one piece of a much bigger plan. Reeves is officially returning for ‘John Wick: Chapter 5’, with Stahelski directing for the fifth time. Between that film, the Caine spinoff and now the animated prequel, Lionsgate is clearly betting that audiences still want more of this universe.

No release date or title has been revealed for the animated movie yet. For now, fans can take comfort in knowing the man who made Wick famous is on board, and that the Impossible Task is finally getting its own big-screen telling.
