Hideo Kojima Has Unfinished Business With Netflix’s ‘Black Doves’
Spy stories have always been Hideo Kojima’s home turf, so it makes sense that ‘Black Doves‘ would eventually land on his radar. The British thriller has spent nearly 2 years building a devoted following, and its return has finally given fans something fresh to talk about.
Season 2 premiered on Netflix on November 5, with all 6 episodes dropping on the same day. That date landed on Bonfire Night in the UK, which feels fitting for a series built on explosive twists. Season 1 first arrived back on December 5, 2024.
Now the ‘Metal Gear’ creator has decided it is time to go back to the beginning. Just 1 day after the premiere, Kojima admitted that he never finished Season 1 of ‘Black Doves’, and with Season 2 out, he is returning to it. It is a small confession, but a telling one from a creator whose career is steeped in espionage.
Kojima is also known as a movie and novel aficionado, so a stylish spy series is a natural fit for his watchlist. He announced a return to the action espionage genre with a new game IP in January 2024, and the cast for that project, ‘Physint’, was revealed in September 2025. A man building his own spy world may well enjoy seeing how another storyteller handles the genre.
Season 1 follows Helen Webb, a politician’s wife who secretly works for the Black Doves, a covert organization that sells state secrets to the highest bidder. Her life begins to unravel after her lover, Jason Davies, is murdered. An old assassin friend then joins her on a quest for truth and vengeance.
Critics were largely won over, with the 6-episode run boasting a 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes and praise for Knightley’s unique take on a spy protagonist. Netflix was so confident that it renewed the show for Season 2 before Season 1 even premiered. It also became one of Netflix’s most successful releases of the 2024 holiday season.

The new season finds Helen still passing her country’s secrets to the Black Doves, only now her husband, Wallace, is preparing to become Prime Minister. Her handler, Mrs. Reed, is caught in a ruthless plot to undermine Helen’s position. Helen reunites with her best friend Sam, a former high-end assassin who now takes low-paying hits and drinks alone in Soho bars. The story follows the pair through a dangerous conspiracy across London and Paris.
Keira Knightley, Ben Whishaw, Sarah Lancashire and Andrew Buchan all return, while series creator Joe Barton remains on board as writer and executive producer, with Julian Farino and Kieron Hawkes directing. The newcomers include Ambika Mod, Babou Ceesay, Sam Riley, Neve Campbell, Sylvia Hoeks, Goran Kostic and Samuel Barnett.

Several of those new faces come with intriguing job descriptions. Mod plays Laila, a sharp-tongued Black Doves agent sent to assist Helen, while Ceesay plays Mr. Conteh, an executive with suspicious motives. Riley appears as Patrick, an emissary from a mysterious organization who offers Sam a lifeline.
Barton has also said that Sam and Helen never really had a Moriarty-style nemesis in Season 1, and that fixing this was high on his list for the follow-up. Meanwhile, the trailer teases trouble at home, with a mysterious voice suggesting to Wallace that his wife is not who he thinks she is.
The sequel also steps away from the holiday setting that defined the debut. Barton told The Hollywood Reporter that it would inevitably not be a Christmas show, which should give the spy games a different visual mood this time around.

Netflix has not confirmed a Season 3, and the streamer is likely to weigh audience reception and viewing numbers before making a call. Attention from a creator like Kojima certainly will not hurt the conversation around the show.
