Movie theater snacks have become a blockbuster event of their own. Collectible buckets, cups and tins now arrive with almost every major release, and moviegoers line up for them like they would for a premiere. Cinemark alone reported a record $25 million in merchandise sales in a single 3-month stretch, which shows how much money is now riding on novelty containers.

Marvel Studios has been in this game for a while. The Galactus bucket for ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ held a massive 341 ounces, and ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ brought an Iron Man helmet bucket that projected an “I love you 3,000” message. It was only a matter of time before the next Avengers movie got its own show-stopping container.

Now there is a closer look at the Doctor Doom popcorn bucket for ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘. In a short video, the hooded villain stands with his arms crossed, wearing a dark green cloak over silver armor. A chain is draped across his chest, star-shaped emblems sit on his shoulders, and his mask glows with green light in the eyes.

The design is a bust of Doom in his signature armor, mask and hood, with the popcorn going in the back. Nerdist pointed out that the glowing green eyes are what lift the bucket above the usual collectible, even if they might feel like a double-edged sword for anyone who eats popcorn in the dark. Cinemark describes its version as an LED Doctor Doom statue bucket.

The road to this reveal has been bumpy. A glowing Doom head went viral in early October, and many fans assumed it was a Cinemark release in the US. Later reports clarified that it was actually posted by Cinemark Brasil for theaters in Brazil, and US chains did not unveil their own lineups until October 29.

When the US chains finally made their announcements, all 5 of the major circuits revealed a Doctor Doom statue bucket. AMC, Regal and Harkins will start selling their items on December 17, the day before the film opens, while supplies last. At AMC, the Doctor Doom Collectible comes with a large popcorn, and fans can also pick up a Bottle of Doom sipper that comes with a fountain drink.

Regal has 2 exclusives of its own: a Doom’s Throne popcorn bucket and a Sentinel drink vessel shaped like the head of one of the X-Men’s robotic hunters. Cinemark rounds things out with an LED Doctor Doom 3D cup, 4 souvenir cups and 3 popcorn tins, all with free same-day refills.

Fans who don’t want to wait can order ahead. The Fandango Fan Store is already selling the Doctor Doom statue bucket bundled with an advance ticket for $79.99.

The bucket fits neatly into a campaign that has put Robert Downey Jr.’s Doom at the center of nearly everything. Downey is stepping into the role after years as Tony Stark, and the film brings together Avengers, Fantastic Four and X-Men characters under directors Anthony and Joe Russo. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is set to open on December 18, with tickets on sale since July, and it leads directly into ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ on December 17, 2027.

Not everyone is thrilled by the avalanche of merchandise. SlashFilm called the theater lineup “samey” and wondered whether so many Doom containers might make fans a little tired of the villain before the movie even arrives. It also pointed out that the film is landing at a moment when superhero fatigue appears to be a very real concern.

The competition at the concession stand will be fierce, too. ‘Dune: Part Three’ opens on the same day and has its own line of outrageous popcorn buckets, including a Spacing Guild Navigator design at Regal. Even ScreenCrush admitted that it might be more tempted by the sandworm-themed gear.

Judging by early online reactions, Doom’s glowing eyes have already won over a large part of the internet. Whether the bucket ends up as a prized collectible or a pricey shelf decoration will depend on how long the lines are on December 17. For fans who love a good concession stand showdown, the Doom bust looks like one of the strongest contenders yet.
