With only a few weeks to go until the release of Superman, the first live-action film in the new DCU, anticipation is building. The film stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent / Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.

Despite the excitement, Superman is launching under the shadow of the now-defunct DCEU. Following its official end, Peter Safran and James Gunn took the reins of the newly established DC Studios. Nearly all former DCEU stars were let go, Jason Momoa being a notable exception, as he is set to return as Lobo in Supergirl.

Many fans, particularly those loyal to the Snyderverse, were unhappy with Zack Snyder’s departure and view Corenswet as an unworthy successor to Henry Cavill’s Superman. Recently, a user on a prominent Snyderverse subreddit even launched a petition encouraging others to review-bomb or sabotage the film upon release.

However, the post was swiftly removed, as the subreddit’s moderators reportedly do not condone such behavior. James Gunn also addressed these actions, stating that they ultimately serve to generate even more free publicity for the film.

Soon after these Snyderverse attempts to sabotage the movie, the independent National Research Group published a report regarding expected Superman box office.

Forecasts show the new film is expected to earn around $135 million in its U.S. debut.

The numbers from NRG come with a range, between $125 million and $145 million—but not everyone is sold on that high of an opening. Some insiders at Warner Bros. and DC Studios are being more careful with expectations, guessing the launch could be as low as $90 million. A debut under $100 million might raise eyebrows, especially for a movie that’s supposed to kick off a whole new chapter for DC.

Others believe the hype could push the film even higher. Some analysts who monitor online buzz think it might climb as high as $175 million. That would be enough to top Batman v Superman as DC’s biggest opener ever. Right now, only The Dark Knight Rises and The Dark Knight stand between it and that title, with openings of just over $160 million each.

Now, an initiative has been launched on a popular DC_Cinematic subreddit titled:” a request to all the dc fans, please dont let superman become a box office flop”

The general consensus is that people are excited for the new Superman movie, but there’s a lot of pressure on it to succeed. DC fans alone won’t be enough to make it a big hit, it needs regular people, families, and kids to care too. If it doesn’t do well, it won’t be because Superman fans didn’t show up, but because the general audience just didn’t bother.

Some fans are comparing it to Thunderbolts, which had a good story but flopped because most people didn’t know or care about the characters. Even though Superman is way more famous, the movie still needs to connect with more than just hardcore DC fans.

There’s also a big feeling of superhero burnout. People are tired after 30+ Marvel movies, tons of TV shows, and all the DC stuff too. It’s just too much, and a lot of folks have moved on. Unless the new Superman movie really stands out and feels fresh, the average moviegoer might not care, even if it is Superman.
