Denis Villeneuve will direct the next James Bond movie, Amazon MGM Studios announced Wednesday. The director known for hits like Dune and Blade Runner 2049 will take over the iconic spy series for the first time since Daniel Craig’s last film in 2021, No Time to Die.

For months, fans and insiders guessed who might direct the new Bond film. Villeneuve was one of several names mentioned, including Edgar Wright and Alfonso Cuarón. The studio confirmed that Amy Pascal and David Heyman will produce the film, with Tanya Lapointe as executive producer.

Amazon took full control of the Bond franchise in 2022 after buying MGM Studios for $8.5 billion. Since then, no new Bond movie was made, possibly due to creative disagreements with longtime producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson. Those issues were resolved earlier this year with a new partnership, clearing the way for the next film.

Some were surprised by Villeneuve’s hiring because he’s currently working on the third Dune movie, scheduled to release in late 2026. He is also attached to other projects like a Cleopatra film and a sci-fi adaptation of Rendezvous with Rama. Despite this, Amazon believes Villeneuve is the right person to bring a fresh vision to Bond.

Villeneuve shared his excitement about the new role. “Some of my earliest movie-going memories are connected to 007. I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever since Dr. No with Sean Connery. I’m a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he’s sacred territory. I intend to honor the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come. This is a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honor. Amy, David, and I are absolutely thrilled to bring him back to the screen. Thank you to Amazon MGM Studios for their trust.”

Mike Hopkins, head of Amazon MGM Studios, praised Villeneuve’s talents. “We are honored that Denis has agreed to direct James Bond’s next chapter. He is a cinematic master, whose filmography speaks for itself. From Blade Runner 2049 to Arrival to the Dune films, he has delivered compelling worlds, dynamic visuals, complex characters, and—most importantly—the immersive storytelling that global audiences yearn to experience in theaters. James Bond is in the hands of one of today’s greatest filmmakers and we cannot wait to get started on 007’s next adventure.”

Producers Pascal and Heyman also expressed their enthusiasm. “Denis Villeneuve has been in love with James Bond movies since he was a little boy. It was always his dream to make this movie, and now it’s ours, too. We are lucky to be in the hands of this extraordinary filmmaker.”

Villeneuve’s past work shows he can handle big, ambitious projects. His Dune films earned both critical acclaim and box office success, grossing over $1 billion worldwide and winning multiple Oscars. He also directed Arrival and Blade Runner 2049, both praised for their style and storytelling.

This announcement marks a major step forward for the Bond series. There’s no word yet on who will play James Bond or when filming will start, but Villeneuve’s appointment signals a new chapter for the franchise.
