Key Star Completely Completely Out Of The Loop Regarding Progress of ‘Sherlock Holmes 3’: “I Really Wish People Would Stop Asking Me”
It’s been more than ten years since the last Sherlock Holmes movie came out, and fans are still waiting for part three. While there have been rumors and updates here and there, one actor who was a big part of the earlier films says he hasn’t heard anything at all.
Jared Harris, who played the villain Moriarty in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, recently spoke with The Direct while promoting the third season of The Foundation. When asked if he knew anything about Sherlock Holmes 3, his answer was pretty clear.
“Yeah. I mean, I keep taking that down [on IMDb] and someone keeps putting it back up. I have no idea. No one’s talking to me about it. And I really wish people would stop asking me… It should be on there. I mean, no one’s talking to me about it. I have no clue,” he said.
Harris first appeared briefly in the 2009 movie and then took center stage in the 2011 sequel. His character, Moriarty, was Holmes’ most dangerous enemy. The second film ended with both Holmes and Moriarty falling off a balcony, but only Holmes returned at the end, leaving many fans wondering if Moriarty survived too.
The first two movies, led by Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes and Jude Law as Dr. Watson, were box office hits. Together, they earned over a billion dollars worldwide. But even with that success, the third movie hasn’t happened yet.
Over the years, Warner Bros. has made several announcements. Back in 2011, they said a third film was being developed. Writers came and went. In 2013, Jude Law said they had met to discuss the project and that a script was being written. A year later, producer Susan Downey said they had an idea and an outline, but nothing final. She also said they were taking their time to get it right.
There were more updates after that. In 2016, Robert Downey Jr. said filming could begin soon. The release date was pushed more than once, and eventually set for December 2021. Director Guy Ritchie was replaced by Dexter Fletcher, and the film even got a large tax break to shoot in California.
Then the COVID-19 pandemic happened, and things slowed down again. Fletcher said in 2021, “We started going and then Covid hit, and they were like, ‘Look we’re going to stand it down and Robert has got something else he wants to do’… These things are so big that you don’t wanna just chisel them into something… I know that Robert will not let that fish off the hook.”
In 2023, Fletcher said he was working with Downey and writer Joe Penhall on the script at Downey’s home. Susan Downey and Amanda Burrell from Team Downey also said it was still a top priority.
But now it’s 2025, and there’s still no real update. And if someone as central as Jared Harris hasn’t even been contacted, it’s hard to know how close, or far, the movie actually is.
The interview was originally published by The Direct.
For now, the wait continues.
