Nintendo Is Going Hollywood With Movies, and They’re Not Stopping Anytime Soon Confirms Nintendo Boss
Nintendo has had huge success turning its games into movies, and now it looks like more are on the way. After The Super Mario Bros. Movie made a big splash in theaters, fans have been wondering what comes next. Well, according to Nintendo’s president Shuntaro Furukawa, the company isn’t done with movies just yet.
During Nintendo’s recent Annual General Meeting, Furukawa was asked if they were planning to make more films beyond Mario and The Legend of Zelda. His answer, which was translated and shared online, gave fans plenty to be excited about.
He said, “We released The Super Mario Bros. Movie in theaters in April 2023, and are pleased to say that it has been received positively by many people around the world. Looking ahead, we plan to release a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros. in April 2026, and a live-action movie of The Legend of Zelda in May 2027.”
He also talked about how Nintendo is staying very hands-on with these projects. Instead of just letting other companies use their characters, Nintendo is involved every step of the way.
Furukawa said, “Rather than simply licensing our IP to film production companies, we are taking a proactive approach where Nintendo itself is deeply involved in production and makes investments as needed. This approach allows us to maintain a strong commitment to the quality of the final product.”
The company didn’t name any other upcoming movies just yet, but Furukawa confirmed that more are being worked on behind the scenes. That’s all fans needed to hear to start guessing what might be next.
One series that probably won’t be getting a Nintendo-led film is Pokémon. That franchise already has its own animation and movies made by other teams, so Nintendo likely won’t touch it. But that just gives room for other favorites to get their time on the big screen.
What’s clear from Furukawa’s comments is that Nintendo wants to make quality movies, not rushed cash grabs. He said, “We are working on various other projects,” and that simple line was enough to get people excited.
With Mario back in theaters in 2026 and Zelda getting the live-action treatment in 2027, it looks like Nintendo’s movie universe is just beginning. Fans are watching closely to see what comes next, and so far, it’s looking pretty promising.
