The DC Universe is undergoing a major transformation under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran. This new era, known as the DCU, will feature an interconnected story that spans across film, television, animation, and gaming. The first chapter of this new universe is titled “Gods and Monsters” and promises to introduce a mix of well-known heroes and lesser-known characters to audiences.

This new slate of projects aims to create a more unified and cohesive narrative for DC characters. While some actors and elements from the previous DC Extended Universe (DCEU) will carry over, this is largely a fresh start. The plan includes a variety of television shows that will explore different corners of the DCU, from monster-filled black ops missions to political intrigue on the island of the Amazons.

Peacemaker (2025)

DC

The second season of ‘Peacemaker’ is set to premiere in August 2025. John Cena will return as the title character, a vigilante dedicated to achieving peace at any cost. The new season will consist of eight episodes written by James Gunn and will be part of the DCU’s “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters”.

Following the events of the first season and the upcoming ‘Superman’ (2025) film, the show will continue to explore the life of Christopher Smith. Frank Grillo will appear as Rick Flag Sr., a character who also features in the animated series ‘Creature Commandos’. The story will address the shift from the old DCEU continuity to the new DCU timeline.

Creature Commandos

DC

The first official project of the new DCU is ‘Creature Commandos’, a seven-episode animated series written by James Gunn. The show follows Amanda Waller as she assembles a black ops team of monstrous prisoners. The team includes characters like Rick Flag Sr., Doctor Phosphorus, Frankenstein, and the Bride of Frankenstein, who is the lead.

A second season of the show is already in development. The voice actors cast for the animated series are intended to also play their characters in future live-action projects, creating consistency across the DCU. This sets the stage for these characters to appear in other DCU movies and TV shows.

Waller

DC

A live-action series centered on Amanda Waller is in the works. The show will be a spin-off from ‘Peacemaker’ and will feature members of the Peacemaker team. Christal Henry, known for her work on ‘Watchmen’, and Jeremy Carver from ‘Supernatural’ are writing the series.

This series will continue to explore the character of Amanda Waller, a key figure who has been responsible for forming teams like the Suicide Squad. Viola Davis is expected to reprise her role as the formidable and ruthless government official. The show will further connect the different parts of the growing DCU narrative.

Lanterns

DC

‘Lanterns’ is an upcoming HBO series that will focus on two of the most famous Green Lanterns, Hal Jordan and John Stewart. The show is described as a large-scale television event and will be a “terrestrial-based” detective story, with the two Lanterns investigating a mystery on Earth.

James Gunn has compared the series to ‘True Detective’, suggesting a dark and serious tone. The central mystery is expected to have significant implications for the main storyline of the entire DCU. The series is being written by a team that includes Damon Lindelof (‘Watchmen’) and Tom King, a celebrated comic book writer.

Paradise Lost

DC

‘Paradise Lost’ is a series set on Themyscira, the island home of Wonder Woman and the Amazons. The show is described as a ‘Game of Thrones’-style story that will delve into the political intrigue and power struggles within the all-female society.

The series will explore the origins and politics of Themyscira before the birth of Wonder Woman. While development on the show is continuing, it is still in the early stages, and a writer had not been found as of early 2024. The show is separate from any upcoming Wonder Woman films.

Booster Gold

DC

A series centered on the character Booster Gold is in development for the DCU. Booster Gold is a unique hero from the future who uses his advanced technology to become a superhero in the present day. The character is often portrayed as a lovable loser seeking fame and fortune.

The show will bring this fan-favorite character to a wider audience. The series is part of the initial slate of projects for “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters,” indicating he could play a role in the broader DCU story. No casting or release date has been announced yet.

Untitled International Shows

DC

DC Studios is also developing several international TV projects that will be set in countries like Korea, Japan, and Brazil. These shows will feature local creative teams and casts, with the stories being written and spoken in the respective country’s language.

One of these international shows is rumored to center on the hero Huntress, with reports suggesting she will be a new iteration of Helena Bertinelli, portrayed as half-Korean and half-Italian. Characters from these international series are expected to appear in English-language DCU projects as well, further expanding the global scope of the new universe.
