Superman Movie Scenes Cut in India for Being ‘Too Sensual’
The new Superman movie has become a hit in India, but not all of it was shown to audiences there. According to reports from Bollywood Hungama and The Wrap, India’s film board, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), removed 41 seconds from the film. They said some parts were “overly sensual.”
The scenes that got cut included two kiss scenes between Superman, played by David Corenswet, and Lois Lane, played by Rachel Brosnahan. Another short moment was also removed, a scene where Guy Gardner, a Green Lantern played by Nathan Fillion, shows his middle finger using his power ring during a fight. The CBFC called this moment a “foul gesture” and removed it.
Even with the missing scenes, the movie still did very well. Warner Bros. India shared that Superman had the biggest opening weekend for a DC film in the country. The film is available in English and in dubbed versions for Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu audiences.
Look up… because the top spot belongs to #Superman as it is officially the #1 movie in India with the biggest opening weekend for a DC film in India!

This is not the first time India’s censors have made changes to a Hollywood film. A similar thing happened with the Apple movie F1, starring Brad Pitt. In that film, a middle finger emoji was changed to a fist bump before the movie was even sent to the CBFC. The studio edited it themselves, expecting that the board would ask for the change.
Some fans in India are unhappy about not seeing Superman and Lois kiss. Their chemistry has been praised online, especially as the movie’s release got closer. In an interview with People magazine, Brosnahan shared how she and Corenswet became friends after getting cast. She said, “We’d had this brief but obviously impactful moment together during our chemistry read… but I think we [David and I] both left feeling like we didn’t remember anything about it, and wanted to spend some time together. We had a really lovely breakfast [in New York] after we found out we were going to be playing the roles together… and got to know each other that way.”
Corenswet also said, “The next thing that happened was we found out we were cast. We didn’t know each other at all.”
Even though parts of the film were cut, Superman’s success in India shows that fans are still excited for the story. But many are hoping that future DC movies might not face the same strict censorship.
