Netflix’s New Thriller Puts Suranne Jones in the Role of a PM Fighting for Her Family and Country
Netflix is getting ready to release a new British thriller called Hostage, and it already looks like it’s going to be packed with drama and tension. The series will arrive on the streaming platform on August 21, 2025. In this political drama, Suranne Jones plays Abigail Dalton, the freshly elected UK Prime Minister who is suddenly thrown into a personal and national crisis.
In the series, Abigail’s husband, played by Ashley Thomas, gets kidnapped. The trailer shows her trying to stay strong while dealing with threats from criminals. Viewers see her in tough moments, like when she says, “These people will stop at nothing, but I can not give in to them.”
Later in the trailer, Downing Street itself is hit by a huge explosion, showing just how serious the situation becomes. Abigail is forced to make difficult decisions. At one point, she says, “I will not negotiate. My loyalties are to this country. I will not allow it to be held to ransom.”
Hostage doesn’t focus only on Abigail. The story also follows the French president, Vivienne Toussaint, played by Julie Delpy, known from the Before trilogy. Her character finds herself blackmailed while visiting the UK, putting both world leaders under extreme pressure at the same time. Netflix explains that both women must face impossible choices and work together, even though their futures might depend on outsmarting each other.
The show was created by Matt Charman, the same writer behind the film Bridge of Spies. According to Netflix, Hostage was filmed in the UK and also on the Canary Islands. The show was originally called The Choice before Netflix announced its final title in early 2025.
Suranne Jones not only stars in the series but also works behind the scenes as an executive producer. She said she’s excited to finally work with Netflix, saying in a statement, “I’m thrilled to be on Netflix, in something I’m really proud of.” She also added, “We’d talked about projects previously, but for me, it was about finding the right thing. Hostage was perfect – me and Matt together backed up by this brilliant, supportive team. I loved it.”
Hostage will be a five-episode miniseries. Fans of political dramas and thrillers can start watching when it drops on August 21, 2025. With big stars, intense drama, and a story about power and family, Hostage promises to keep viewers on edge.
