Most people think of Rocky Balboa or John Rambo when they hear Sylvester Stallone’s name. Those two characters made him famous around the world and turned him into a Hollywood legend. But while Rocky made him a star, it was Rambo who pushed Stallone into the action hero spotlight in the 80s and 90s.

The original “First Blood” came out in 1982 and was a huge success. It made more than 125 million dollars at the box office, even though the movie only cost around 15 million to make. Fans and critics both praised Stallone’s acting, especially because he barely spoke for most of the movie.

Instead, he used body language and emotion to show the pain of his character, a Vietnam veteran struggling with PTSD. The film’s ending, where Rambo breaks down emotionally, is still remembered as one of Stallone’s strongest acting moments. Interestingly, Stallone famously fought to change the original ending of the movie. In that version, Rambo was supposed to die by suicide, but Stallone convinced the filmmakers to go with the ending fans know today. He has often spoken about how proud he was of “First Blood” and how it changed his career.

But in a 2022 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Stallone surprised many by naming “Rambo IV” from 2008 as the action movie he’s most proud of. He explained why he felt that way, saying it was not just a typical action movie, but something more real and intense.

“One film I’m truly proud of — it’s the best action film I’ve ever done because it’s the most truthful — is ‘Rambo IV,’ dealing with Burma, where they’ve had a civil war for 67 years. But I got excoriated because the movie’s so violent. And it is violent. It’s horrifying. It’s children being burnt alive. That’s what makes civil war worse than anything: It’s your neighbor, all of a sudden, killing you. I was really happy with that film, and I never thought it would ever reach the theater. I thought, ‘They’re never going to show this.’”

“Rambo IV” showed a darker, more brutal version of Stallone’s iconic character. Set in Burma (now Myanmar), the film focused on the real-world civil war in the region, which Stallone used as the backdrop for the story.

The movie shocked many people with its raw violence and harsh scenes, but that was Stallone’s goal. He wanted to show the horrors of war without softening the reality for audiences. This was not a movie just about explosions and gunfights; it was meant to be a brutal reminder of the suffering happening in real life.

While not as financially successful as the original film, “Rambo IV” gained a loyal fan following. Many viewers appreciated the honest and unflinching way Stallone told the story. Over time, the movie has become somewhat of a cult favorite, praised for being more than just another action sequel.

In a world of Hollywood blockbusters that often avoid difficult topics, Stallone used this movie to shine a light on a real humanitarian crisis.

“Rambo IV” may not be everyone’s favorite, but for Stallone, it stands as his boldest work. Fans who grew up watching him as the muscle-bound hero in the 80s were surprised to see him take such a serious and dark approach, but that’s what makes the movie stand out even today.

Stallone’s choice shows that for him, being an action star wasn’t just about big stunts and cool fights. It was also about telling stories that mattered.
