Nick Frost is the new Hagrid in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series. Fans got their first look at him in the famous half-giant’s robes, which were first worn by the late Robbie Coltrane in the original movies.

The image was shared just one day after HBO showed the first official photo of Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter himself. Cameras started rolling yesterday at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden.

Hagrid is one of the most loved characters from the books and movies. He’s the gamekeeper at Hogwarts, loves magical creatures, and has always been loyal to Dumbledore. He’s also one of the first people Harry meets in the first story. HBO’s version of the character looks close to what fans remember, though Nick Frost brings his own take to the role.

Nick Frost, known from Hot Fuzz, is one of the biggest names added to the new Harry Potter cast. He joins John Lithgow, Paapa Essiedu, and Janet McTeer, who will be playing Dumbledore, Severus Snape, and Professor McGonagall. HBO also revealed more of the cast recently.

Rory Wilmot will play Neville Longbottom, Amos Kitson is set to appear as Dudley Dursley, Louise Brealey will be Madam Hooch, and Anton Lesser will become Ollivander. Earlier cast announcements confirmed Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy and Johnny Flynn as his father, Lucius. There’s also Bel Powley and Daniel Rigby as Petunia and Vernon Dursley, Harry’s aunt and uncle. Katherine Parkinson has been cast as Molly Weasley.

The three main roles, Harry, Ron, and Hermione, will be played by newcomers Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, and Arabella Stanton. According to HBO, this new show is planned as a long-term project, possibly running for ten years.

The series is being described by HBO as a “faithful adaptation” of J.K. Rowling’s books. Rowling herself is involved as executive producer. Francesca Gardiner is both writing and executive producing the show. Mark Mylod will direct several episodes and will also serve as executive producer. The series is produced by HBO, working together with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros Television. Other producers include Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, and David Heyman from Heyday Films.

According to HBO, the series will officially arrive in 2027.
