Casey Bloys, the chairman and CEO of HBO and Max content, had a great morning as his combined platforms scored 142 Emmy nominations, the highest ever for the company. Bloys shared that his head of awards, Austin O’Malia, prepared him for different results but was confident going in. “If he feels good, I feel good,” Bloys said, and the results clearly showed they were right to be optimistic.

Among the big Emmy highlights were 24 nominations for “The Penguin,” which topped the limited or anthology series category this year. “The White Lotus” followed closely with 23 nominations, “The Last of Us” earned 16, “Hacks” received 14, and “The Pitt” got 13 nods.

One major talking point has been Neil Druckmann stepping away from “The Last of Us.” When asked about this change and what it means for the show’s future, Bloys said it was great having Neil involved from the start.

He explained that the show’s original spark came from Craig Mazin, who wanted to take on the project after “Chernobyl.” Bloys said, “That’s what was most important to me, Craig’s creative excitement about the show.” He added that while Neil has a big job running Naughty Dog and making video games, he has left a solid foundation for the show. Bloys is confident with Craig’s experience at the helm and said, “I’m not worried at all.”

Looking ahead to season 3, Bloys confirmed the series is planned for 2027. He mentioned that Craig Mazin is still deciding whether the story will continue for two more seasons or just one longer season. Bloys said he is following Mazin’s lead on that decision.

“The series is definitely planned for 2027. Craig is still working it out whether it will be two more seasons or one more long season. It hasn’t been decided yet, and I’m following Craig’s lead on that.”

There have been questions about how changes in the cast, like Pedro Pascal leaving and the uncertain role of Bella, might affect the show. Bloys said this isn’t a problem for marketing because the series has strong ties to the popular video game and the first two seasons have set a solid foundation. He also shared his appreciation for shows that explore different viewpoints within a story.

Season 2 of “The Last of Us” has been met with high praise. It holds an excellent score on review sites, with many critics celebrating its deep storytelling, strong performances, and impressive production.

Fans and critics alike agree it raises the bar for video game adaptations on screen. The show’s action scenes, direction, and character development received a lot of positive attention. Some found the pacing uneven and felt the story left some questions unanswered, but overall, the response was very favorable.

Critics also highlighted the emotional depth of the characters and the complex relationships portrayed. The writing and adaptation choices have been appreciated for adding new layers to the story while respecting the original game. The performances, especially by the main cast, were widely praised for bringing warmth, intensity, and nuance to their roles.

Overall, “The Last of Us” continues to impress audiences and critics, setting itself apart as a top-tier show with a strong future ahead.
