‘Godzilla Minus One’ Sequel Could Arrive Sooner Than Expected, New Reports Reveal
The next Godzilla movie might hit theaters sooner than fans thought. According to Toho International, the sequel to Godzilla Minus One could be ready as early as 2026, as reported by Bloomberg News. The report also says Toho is planning other projects, like a possible Shin Godzilla sequel and a new movie set in Southeast Asia.
At the same time, Toho is working with Legendary on season two of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, which is planned for release next year on Apple TV+.
Even though director Takashi Yamazaki said back in January and February 2024 that there were no official plans for a sequel yet, he admitted he was interested in making one. Speaking to Mono Magazine, Yamazaki said he wanted to keep following the same characters and this time give Godzilla a rival monster to fight.
He also shared an idea of focusing the story on a curse left behind by Godzilla, similar to the curse from Princess Mononoke. Actress Minami Hamabe joked in the same interview, saying, “If there is a next series, I might be the one stepping on and crushing people.” Fellow cast member Sakura Ando told the Daily Express she wanted her character to meet Godzilla in the sequel, laughing that she’d like to be “jumping like this Spider-Man-type woman taking down Godzilla.”
The topic of a sequel came up during a special event in Tokyo on January 12, 2024, after a screening of the black-and-white version of Godzilla Minus One. Some of the movie’s stars were there in person, while Yamazaki joined remotely from the United States. He said he was thinking about bringing the characters back to the ocean in the next film.
Actor Ryunosuke Yamada shared his own theory that Noriko, his co-star’s character, could help find Godzilla again, saying she might carry the creature’s “cells.”
During a Q&A with Collider in February 2024, Yamazaki confirmed he was working on a new movie. But at the time, he said it was not going to be a sequel to Godzilla Minus One. Still, on November 1, 2024, Toho revealed that a new Godzilla film had been greenlit, with Yamazaki returning to direct, write, and handle visual effects. They didn’t say if it was officially a follow-up to Minus One or a fresh story.
In February 2025, Yamazaki announced at the Visual Effects Society Awards that work had started on the script and storyboards. He also mentioned the film’s budget would be larger than the last one. Two months later, Bloomberg reported that a sequel was in development.
While nothing has been officially confirmed about the release date, Toho’s president Ueda now says the sequel could arrive in 2026. Producer Minami Ichikawa explained why Toho has taken its time. In his words, “Godzilla deserves to have that level of intentionality.” He also said Toho wants “great ideas, an excellent script, a talented director, and the right cast to work on it carefully.”
For now, fans can only wait, but it sounds like the next chapter in Godzilla’s story might not be far away.
Possible release date was first reported by Bloomberg.
