Ari Aster Plans ‘Eddington’ Sequel and New Horror Film Despite A24’s Taking Losses on His Movies
Ari Aster, the director known for movies like “Hereditary” and “Midsommar,” recently shared that he’s thinking about his next projects. He talked about his plans during an interview on The Big Picture podcast. According to Aster, he’s working on ideas for a sequel to “Eddington,” a new horror movie, and a sci-fi film.
“I’ve got a sequel that I’ve been cooking up for Eddington,” Aster said during the interview. “I got a horror movie I’m interested in doing. There’s a sci-fi adaptation that I’m thinking about. I’m trying to determine the right thing to do next.”
Aster made a big name for himself with his first two movies, “Hereditary” and “Midsommar.” Both films were successful and helped him become one of the most talked-about horror directors in recent years.
But his next two films didn’t do as well. “Beau Is Afraid” confused many people and lost money for A24, the studio that gave Aster the chance to make it. Then came “Eddington,” which also didn’t find a big audience. Its opening weekend made only around $4.5 million.
A24 had taken risks on Aster by giving him big budgets. They spent around $35 million on “Beau Is Afraid” and another $30 million on “Eddington.” Both movies didn’t make enough money to cover their costs. Aster himself once joked that he was surprised A24 gave him that much money for “Beau Is Afraid.”
Because of these losses, there are now questions about whether A24 will continue working with Aster or if other studios will support his future projects. Studios everywhere are cutting back budgets and being more careful about the movies they greenlight. Aster’s unusual style might make it harder for him to get big projects funded without some changes.
However, Aster returning to horror could be the best move. Horror movies often make money, and it’s the genre that made him popular in the first place. If he creates something closer to “Hereditary,” there’s a good chance both fans and studios will support it.
Right now, Aster seems to have a few options in front of him, but it’s unclear what project he’ll choose. Whether it’s more horror, science fiction, or a follow-up to “Eddington,” fans will be watching closely to see what he does next.
