Kevin Feige Drops Exciting Update on Chris Hemsworth’s Return to the MCU
Chris Hemsworth is set to return as Thor in the upcoming movie Avengers: Doomsday, which is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, 2026. Following that, Avengers: Secret Wars will come out a year later on December 17, 2027. Beyond these two films, Marvel hasn’t officially announced what’s next for Thor or Hemsworth.
Kevin Feige recently spoke about the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the topic of Thor came up.
He said, “Where we have great actors playing great characters, I think it would be fun to see them in multiple places.” This suggests Feige sees value in keeping strong actors like Hemsworth involved for a while longer.
There’s also been talk about recasting some of Marvel’s iconic heroes like Iron Man and Captain America. Feige explained it’s a mixed situation. While some characters will eventually get new actors, Feige feels Hemsworth is still in his prime as Thor.
He also enjoys seeing actors who played Marvel roles years ago come back, like Tim Blake Nelson’s Samuel Stern in Captain America: Brave New World. However, Feige made it clear that recasting will definitely happen eventually, and he mentioned, “X-Men is where that will happen.”
Recently, Chris Hemsworth shared a special video on social media that Marvel originally released in 2022 to celebrate his time as Thor.
This time, Hemsworth added a heartfelt message about what the role has meant to him. He wrote, “Playing Thor has been one of the greatest honors of my life. For the last 15 years I’ve held Mjolnir and then Stormbreaker as the God of Thunder, but what made it truly special… was sharing it with all of you. Your passion, your cheers, and your love for this character have meant everything to me. Thank you for making my journey through the Marvel Cinematic Universe unforgettable.. Next up, Doomsday!”
Fans have been buzzing about this post, with some wondering if Hemsworth is hinting at saying goodbye or preparing to wrap up his time as Thor soon.
Meanwhile, rumors have been swirling for almost a year about Thor 5. Reports suggest the next Thor movie will have a darker tone. The studio has even been looking to bring in Gareth Edwards as director. According to insiders from HolyField News, production on Thor 5 could begin in late 2025 under Kevin Feige’s leadership.
The film is expected to show Thor returning to Valhalla to regain powerful abilities. Fans might also get to see Beta Ray Bill, a fan-favorite character, finally appear on screen.
One big change to note is that Taika Waititi, who directed Thor: Ragnarok, will not be involved in this new project.
This all points to exciting changes for Thor’s future in the MCU, with Chris Hemsworth likely sticking around for a while longer, even as new stories and characters emerge.
