‘Wednesday’ Is Back: Season 3 Confirmed, Spin-Off in Talks
Jenna Ortega and Tim Burton have teamed up again to talk about all things Wednesday. They recently sat down for their first major interview together, and while both of them aren’t huge fans of press, they had some exciting news to share: Wednesday is coming back for Season 3, and a spin-off show could be on the way too.
Jenna has become a huge name since Wednesday premiered on Netflix. The show was a massive hit, pulling in over 250 million views worldwide, according to Netflix. Now she’s returning for another season, and she’s not just the star anymore , she’s also one of the producers.
The show’s creators, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, told The Hollywood Reporter that they’re thinking about how to expand the Wednesday world even more. Gough said, “It’s something we’re definitely noodling; there are other characters we can look at.” Netflix’s content boss Bela Bajaria also said, “There’s a lot to explore in the Addams Family.”
Season 2 is already finished and will premiere on August 6. Jenna mentioned that filming this time felt different, in a good way. “Netflix has a lot more trust this time,” she said. “We were able to do things on a grander scale and take more time with scenes.” She also mentioned that Steve Buscemi and Billie Piper are joining the cast.
Tim Burton, who directed the show and also the upcoming Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, said he was drawn to Wednesday even though he hadn’t done TV before. “As much as a middle-aged man could feel like a teenage Wednesday Addams, I feel those things,” he said.
Jenna’s connection to the character goes way back. She actually auditioned to play Wednesday in an animated film when she was 14 but didn’t get the part. “That would be cool to be her, though,” she told her mom at the time.
Tim said casting Jenna for the live-action version was the most important part of making the show work. “If we didn’t find Wednesday, there is no show,” he said. He added that Jenna brought something special to the role. “You can become a lot of different things as an actor. But for Wednesday, you have to have it.”
The success of Season 1 wasn’t without some drama. After the show aired, Jenna said in a podcast that she had changed some of her lines during filming because they didn’t feel right for the character. That comment caused some backlash. Now she says she didn’t mean for it to come off the way it did.
“I mean, I felt terrible. In no way did I mean to come across that way,” she explained. “All I needed to say was, ‘I improvise.’”
Despite the noise online, the show’s creators backed her up. Gough said, “She’s very involved, and she has a 360-degree view of things that, frankly, you don’t find with most actors.”
There’s still no clear answer on how many seasons Wednesday will have. Gough and Millar said they could follow Wednesday’s school life for up to seven seasons, but Jenna might want to move on at some point. She’s talked before about wanting to direct and try new projects. Tim joked about it and said, “You’re talking to two of the worst people to ask that question.”
And if Jenna ever decides to leave early, it wouldn’t really be a surprise. It would actually fit with her character. Wednesday Addams is known for walking away when she’s had enough.
As for the possible spin-off, no one’s sharing details yet. It’s still in the early stages, but it’s clear they’re thinking about it seriously. They want to go beyond just Wednesday and explore more of the Addams Family world.
Fans don’t need to worry, though. With Season 2 arriving soon and Season 3 already confirmed, there’s more Wednesday on the way. And with a spin-off being discussed, the universe might get even bigger.
Even though Jenna and Tim don’t love doing interviews, it’s clear they enjoy working together. They’ve built a creative connection that works. At one point, Jenna even joked, “I’m a creep. You’re never not being watched by me.”
So yes, Wednesday is back. And it sounds like she’s here to stay, at least for now.
