Critical Role had some major announcements at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. The team behind the hit animated fantasy series The Legend of Vox Machina revealed that the show has been renewed for a fifth season, but it will also be the last. Season 4 is still on the way too, but fans will have to be patient. It’s not coming to Prime Video until 2026.

While fans wait for the next Vox Machina episodes, they can look forward to something new. The Mighty Nein, Critical Role’s next animated series, is officially set to premiere on November 19, 2025. Both shows will stream on Prime Video.

The Legend of Vox Machina is based on Critical Role’s very first Dungeons & Dragons campaign, where the cast plays a team of chaotic and lovable adventurers. Laura Bailey voices the sharp-shooting half-elf ranger Vex.

Her twin brother Vax is played by Liam O’Brien. Travis Willingham brings the strong but goofy Grog to life, while Ashley Johnson plays the kind and brave cleric Pike. Taliesin Jaffe is the stylish gunslinger Percy.

Marisha Ray voices Keyleth, a druid who controls nature, and Sam Riegel is the loud and wild bard Scanlan. Dungeon Master Matthew Mercer plays a wide range of side characters.

The third season ended with Vox Machina finally beating the Chroma Conclave, a group of evil dragons. After that, the team split up. But the last few seconds of the season teased something dark—Vecna, a terrifying villain from the Critical Role universe.

According to the official announcement, Season 4 will show the group off on separate journeys before a huge threat pulls them back together.

In a message to fans, Riegel and Willingham said, “It’s so rare for any television series to get to tell a complete story, beginning to end, exactly as it was envisioned. We’re so grateful to our fans, the critters, our partners at Prime Video, and the original Kickstarter backers for bringing this show to life, and turning the numbskulls of Vox Machina into animation legends.”

The show has been a hit with fans and critics, with people praising the voice acting, animation, action, and how closely it follows the original campaign. The series takes place in the world of Exandria, a fantasy land created by Mercer. Most of the action happens in Tal’Dorei, in places like Emon and Whitestone.

Now, the spotlight shifts to The Mighty Nein, a brand-new animated series that takes place in the same world but follows a different cast of characters on a different continent. This new series is based on Critical Role’s second campaign.

In The Mighty Nein, Laura Bailey plays the joyful trickster Jester. Willingham is the former pirate Fjord. Riegel becomes the sneaky goblin Nott the Brave. Ray plays Beauregard, a monk with a strong punch and sharper attitude. Jaffe is the colorful and mysterious Mollymauk. Johnson plays Yasha, a quiet but powerful warrior. Mercer, again, voices tons of supporting roles.

The new show follows a team of misfits who have to come together to face a major threat. The official description reads, “The Mighty Nein follows a group of fugitives and outcasts, bound by secrets and scars. But when a powerful arcane relic known as ‘The Beacon’ falls into dangerous hands, they must learn to work together to save the realm and stop reality itself from unraveling.”

Some major guest stars are also joining the voice cast for Season 1, including Mark Strong, Alan Cumming, Tim McGraw, Anika Noni Rose, Ming-Na Wen, Auli’i Cravalho, Rahul Kohli, Robbie Daymond, and Jonathan Frakes.

The original Mighty Nein campaign was streamed live on Twitch and YouTube and ran for 141 episodes, more than 550 hours total. It aired every Thursday night and later moved fully under Critical Role Productions.

The story takes place in Wildemount, during a time of war and political chaos. The group works to stop the fighting between two major powers—the Dwendalian Empire and the Kryn Dynasty—while also dealing with threats that could destroy the entire world.

After the campaign ended, Critical Role brought the Mighty Nein back for two special events: The Mighty Nein Reunited in 2022, and Echoes of the Solstice, a live show in 2023. The campaign and cast have won several awards, including honors from the Webby Awards and the Shorty Awards.

The animated version of The Mighty Nein was first announced in January 2023. The premiere date is now set for November 19, 2025, on Prime Video.

This news was confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con by Critical Role and Prime Video. Whether you’ve followed these characters from the beginning or are just jumping in now, there’s still a lot more story ahead in the world of Exandria.
