89% Rotten Tomatoes Action-Comedy Starring Pedro Pascal is Coming to HBO Max
An action-comedy starring Pedro Pascal that earned a high audience score is making its way to streaming. The film, which had a limited run in theaters, will soon be available to a much wider audience on HBO Max. This gives viewers who missed it the first time a chance to see what the buzz is about.
The movie is an anthology film, meaning it tells several different stories that are loosely connected. Set in Oakland, California, in 1987, the plot follows a diverse group of characters whose lives intersect in unexpected ways. These characters include teen punks, a female rap duo, a corrupt police officer, and an NBA star. The movie blends action, humor, and moments of intense conflict.
The film, titled “Freaky Tales,” will be available for streaming on HBO Max starting on Friday, August 8. It will also have its broadcast debut on HBO on Saturday, August 9. The movie premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was praised for its energetic style and entertaining performances.
“Freaky Tales” features a large and notable cast. Alongside Pedro Pascal, the film stars Ben Mendelsohn, Jay Ellis, Normani, and Dominique Thorne. The late Angus Cloud also appears in one of his final roles. The movie even includes a surprise appearance by Tom Hanks as a video store owner. The film was written and directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who previously directed “Captain Marvel.”
The story is told in four interconnected parts. One segment focuses on teen punks who find themselves in a conflict with neo-Nazis. Another follows the journey of a rising female rap duo. A third story centers on an NBA player, and Pascal stars in a segment called “Born to Mack,” where he plays a man trying to leave his life of crime behind. These separate tales come together at the end of the film.
Despite positive feedback from those who saw it, “Freaky Tales” had a very limited release in theaters, playing in just 393 locations and earning only $400,000 at the box office. However, it received a high 89% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes from viewers who did see it. Now, its arrival on HBO Max will allow many more people to watch the film.
