The future of Jason Momoa’s Aquaman in the new DCU is still up in the air, according to James Gunn. The DCU is starting fresh, moving away from the old DCEU stories and characters, but Gunn hasn’t decided if Aquaman’s movies will be part of this new world.

On his recently launched podcast, Peacemaker: The Official Podcast, Gunn talked about a scene from Peacemaker Season 1 that mentioned Aquaman. He said this might mean Aquaman’s movie could become canon in the DCU, but he doesn’t really think that will happen.

Gunn explained, “Is Aquaman canon? We don’t know, but I don’t think Aquaman is canon.” He also hinted that if the old Aquaman stays in the DCU, the timeline might have to be changed because “It’s unlikely that Aquaman is a famous hero in the DCU as Superman and Peacemaker Season 2 is happening.”

Interestingly, the podcast was taken down from most platforms shortly after it launched, and it’s not clear if it will come back. The podcast was meant to go over Peacemaker Season 1 and explain how it fits into the new DCU.

The DCU is carving its own path with shows like Creature Commandos and the new Superman, but Peacemaker has to deal with the tricky history of constant reboots in DC’s recent past.

Aquaman was the most successful movie in the DCEU, but the second Aquaman movie didn’t do as well, and the DCU’s current setting, where metahumans have been known for centuries, doesn’t really fit with Aquaman’s origin story from the previous films.

Another factor is Jason Momoa’s role in the new DCU. He’s expected to appear next year as Lobo, a wild intergalactic bounty hunter, in the Supergirl movie. Even if he could look different enough to play both roles, it would be a big time commitment for him since he has other projects lined up.
