George R.R. Martin Praises James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ as One of the Best Superhero Movies Ever
James Gunn’s new Superman movie has hit theaters and is already making a big splash worldwide. Critics are loving it, and it’s breaking box office records left and right. This film marks a powerful start for the live-action part of the new DC Universe (DCU), bringing back what Superman really stands for, hope, strength, emotional depth, and even some laughs.
One notable fan of the movie is George R.R. Martin, the famous author behind the A Song of Ice and Fire books. Martin took to his blog to share his excitement and praise for the film.
He wrote that “It’s been months since Parris and I last went to the movies, but we finally got out of the house last week, and bopped down to the Violet Crown to catch SUPERMAN. I’m glad we did. Supes and I are old friends, and this is one of the best Superman movies in a long time… maybe ever.”
Martin felt the new Superman reminded him of the classic hero he grew up reading about “the strange visitor from another planet who came to Earth with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men. (And yes, an innocent, of course, he’s always been an immigrant. And an illegal immigrant, when you stop to think if it).”
He also praised James Gunn’s casting choices, calling Rachel Bosnahan’s Lois Lane performance “terrific,” and saying she could be the best Lois alongside Margot Kidder. Martin was especially impressed with Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, calling him “far and away the Best Luthor of All Time, a truly chilling villain.” And of course, he had kind words for the actor playing Superman, hoping “he gets to play Kal-El in another dozen movies.”
Superman had its premiere at the TCL Chinese Theater on July 7, 2025, and officially opened in U.S. theaters on July 11. The movie is the first installment of the DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. It has already earned $472 million worldwide, ranking as the eighth-highest-grossing movie of 2025.
Critics mostly liked the film, describing it as fun, colorful, and sincere. While some thought it packed in a lot of story, the performances by David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nicholas Hoult received special praise.
David Corenswet, who plays Superman, revealed he has signed on for several more projects in the DCU. Meanwhile, director James Gunn hinted that the next Superman movie might actually be a team-up film instead of a solo sequel.
