James Gunn is once again having fun with the idea of Bat-Mite, the tiny, reality-bending goof and a menace from another dimension, and this time he’s joking about throwing him into Robert Pattinson’s world.

Gunn recently spoke to HBO and joked that Bat-Mite should fight Pattinson’s Batman.

“I talked to Matt Reeves yesterday, I’ll talk to him today, I’ll call him and go ‘how about Bat-Mite??’ Matt’s gonna love that idea!”

Bat-Mite has been coming up more and more lately in DC conversations, even if mostly as a joke. At one point, there were rumors that he’d appear in Peacemaker Season 2, but Gunn shut those down quickly on Threads.

Josh Horrowitz joked about Bat-Mite getting his own show, and Gunn played along, replying, “Yeah, the HBO Bat-Mite show. $150 million an episode.”

For those who don’t know, Bat-Mite is a pretty odd character. He was first introduced way back in 1959 by creators Bill Finger and Sheldon Moldoff. He looks like a tiny version of Batman in a homemade costume and comes from the Fifth Dimension, the same place Mister Mxyzptlk (Superman’s impish enemy) is from.

Bat-Mite doesn’t mean any harm, but his over-the-top admiration for Batman usually ends up causing chaos. Sometimes he’s been written as if he might not even be real, possibly just something Batman imagined. He faded out of the comics after 1964 when editor Julius Schwartz changed the tone of the series, but he’s popped up every now and then over the years.

Most recently, there was even a rumor that Bat-Mite might show up in The Batman Part II, but again, nothing’s been confirmed. When Deadline asked Gunn if he’d read Matt Reeves’ script and whether Bat-Mite was in it, Gunn just smiled and said, “It’s great.” No real answer, but his tone says it all, Bat-Mite is probably staying in joke territory for now.

Still, with James Gunn at the helm of DC Studios, you never really know. He clearly loves the weirder corners of the universe, and Bat-Mite fits that perfectly. Whether it’s just a running gag or a seed for something down the line, the idea of Bat-Mite facing off against Pattinson’s gritty Batman is hilarious, and oddly tempting.
