If you missed 28 Years Later in theaters, you’re in luck. The third movie in the 28 Days Later franchise is now officially available on digital, as announced by Sony. You can rent or buy it starting July 29, and if you’re a fan of horror, this is one you won’t want to skip.

The film is directed by Danny Boyle, who also made the original back in 2002. This time, the story takes place decades after the first rage virus outbreak.

Survivors now live on a remote island, still trying to deal with the fallout of everything that’s happened. The cast includes Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes, and newcomer Alfie Williams in his first movie role.

The movie has been well received. It holds an 88% score on Rotten Tomatoes and got positive reviews from critics.

Along with the digital release, fans can also look forward to a physical version later this year. Sony confirmed that a 4K UHD Steelbook, Blu-ray, and DVD will hit shelves on September 23. Those versions will come with bonus content like behind-the-scenes footage and featurettes called “Becoming the Infected,” “Days to Years,” and “Capturing the Chaos.”

28 Years Later has had a long road to get here. A third movie was talked about for years after 28 Weeks Later came out in 2007, but rights issues and delays kept it from moving forward. Things changed when producer Andrew Macdonald bought back the rights to the first film from Searchlight Pictures and made a deal with Sony. That move finally allowed the team to go ahead with more sequels.

Danny Boyle returned to direct, while Alex Garland wrote the script. They also brought back original cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle. Cillian Murphy, who starred in the first movie, didn’t appear this time but did come back as an executive producer.

The movie hit theaters in the US and UK on June 20, 2025, and has already made $150 million at the box office on a $60 million budget. A sequel, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, was filmed at the same time and is scheduled to come out in January 2026.

So, if you’ve been waiting to see how this next chapter plays out, now’s your chance to check it out from the comfort of home.
