Stephen Curry Drops First Trailer for Animated Sports Movie ‘GOAT’ — And It’s Not What You Think
Sony Pictures Animation has just released the teaser trailer for GOAT, and it’s not about Stephen Curry calling himself the greatest of all time.
Instead, the NBA superstar is helping tell the story of a small goat with a big dream. And no, Curry doesn’t play the goat, he actually voices a giraffe.
GOAT is an original animated movie coming from Sony Pictures Animation and Columbia Pictures, the same team behind Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. It follows Will Harris, a young goat who wants to go pro in a wild, high-speed sport called roarball. The main character is voiced by Stranger Things star Caleb McLaughlin.
The movie is set in a world full of animals, and roarball is a full-contact, co-ed sport where only the toughest survive. So when Will gets his big chance to play with the pros, no one takes him seriously. He’s small, not exactly intimidating, and his new teammates don’t want him on the squad. But Will is ready to prove everyone wrong.
As Sony Pictures Animation puts it, “Will is determined to revolutionize the sport and prove once and for all that ‘smalls can ball!’” The teaser trailer leans into that underdog energy, with the classic track “I Wish” by Skee-Lo playing in the background while Will trains and tries to fit in with the big leagues.
Stephen Curry, who helped produce the film through his company Unanimous Media, pops up in the trailer to introduce the project. He also voices Lenny Williamson, a giraffe athlete who plays in the same league. Curry shared the movie’s main message himself: “You’re never too small to dream big.”
The film is directed by Tyree Dillihay, with Adam Rosette co-directing. It’s Dillihay’s first time directing a full-length movie. The script comes from Aaron Buchsbaum and Teddy Riley. Curry also produced the movie along with Erick Peyton, Michelle Raimo Kouyate, Adam Rosenberg, and Rodney Rothman.
The voice cast is stacked. Besides McLaughlin and Curry, the film features Gabrielle Union as a black leopard named Jett Fillmore, Nick Kroll as a fire-breathing komodo dragon called Modo, Nicola Coughlan as an ostrich player, David Harbour as a tough rhino, and Patton Oswalt as the team’s coach. Jenifer Lewis voices the team owner. Jennifer Hudson, Jelly Roll, Aaron Pierre, and Ayesha Curry also lend their voices to the movie.
The film will be released on February 13, 2026, right in time for NBA All-Star Weekend, which will be taking place in Los Angeles that year. That’s no coincidence, the movie is clearly meant to connect with both basketball fans and animation lovers.
Sony Pictures Releasing will handle the movie’s release in theaters, and after that, GOAT will stream on Netflix as part of a deal for Sony’s movies. Eventually, it’ll also make its way to Disney+ and Hulu.
GOAT looks like it’s mixing comedy, sports action, and a strong message about proving yourself, no matter your size. With its all-animal world and colorful characters, it’s shaping up to be a sports movie that’s fun for everyone, not just basketball fans.
