The popular horror movie series “Hostel” is getting a new life as a TV show, and it will be coming to Peacock, the streaming service from NBCUniversal.

According to Variety, the series is currently in development for Peacock, although it was first reported earlier this year without a confirmed platform.

Paul Giamatti, known for his incredible acting skills and multiple award nominations, is set to star in the series. Eli Roth, the creator behind the original “Hostel” films, will be heavily involved as the writer, director, and executive producer.

Chris Briggs and Mike Fleiss, who produced the movies, are also on board as executive producers. The studio behind the project is Fifth Season. Details about the plot are still being kept secret for now.

The original “Hostel” movies tell a chilling story about a secret organization called the Elite Hunting Club, which operates in Eastern Europe.

This group kidnaps unsuspecting tourists and offers them up to rich clients who pay to torture and kill them. The first film came out in 2006, directed and written by Roth. He also returned for the 2007 sequel, but the third movie, released straight to video in 2011, didn’t involve him.

Despite mixed reviews from critics, the first two films did very well financially. Together, they made nearly $120 million worldwide on relatively small budgets of about $4.8 million and $10.2 million. The third film received better reviews than the second but didn’t have wide theatrical release numbers available.

Paul Giamatti is considered one of the best actors of his generation, with two Oscar nominations for “Cinderella Man” and “The Holdovers.” He has also been nominated for six Golden Globes, winning for his roles in the HBO series “John Adams,” the film “Barney’s Version,” and “The Holdovers.”

Giamatti said that he’s interested in doing more horror projects and even named “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” as his favorite horror movie.

The “Hostel” franchise focuses on a Slovakian criminal group that traps foreign visitors in hostels where wealthy sadists bid on them to inflict torture and murder. Over the films, the cult’s reach is shown to be global.

The original “Hostel,” starring Jay Hernandez, received mixed reviews but was a box office success. The sequel had an even more divided response but still made a profit. The third film got better reviews than the previous ones but was released directly to home video.

Variety is the source of the information about the new series development, casting, and production details.

Fans of the “Hostel” movies can look forward to seeing this terrifying story expanded on TV with big names like Eli Roth and Paul Giamatti involved.
