Netflix’s hit sci-fi show 3 Body Problem is bringing in some new faces for its second season, including a star from Game of Thrones. According to reports, Alfie Allen, known for his role as Theon Greyjoy, will join the cast in a recurring role.

Alongside him, David Yip from The Chinese Detective and Jordan Sunshine of Wonder Pets have also been added. These newcomers will join previously announced actors Claudia Doumit and Ellie De Lange.

Filming for the new season has just started in Budapest, Hungary. The production also confirmed that several cast members from season one will return, making a big jump in the story’s timeline.

Jess Hong will continue as Jin, Benedict Wong as Da Shi, Eiza González as Auggie, Jovan Adepo as Saul, Saamer Usmani as Raj, Liam Cunningham as Wade, Marlo Kelly as Tatiana, Sea Shimooka as Sophon, and Josh Brener as Kent.

3 Body Problem is a sci-fi series created by David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo. It is based on the famous Chinese novel series Remembrance of Earth’s Past by Liu Cixin. The show’s title comes from the first book in the series, The Three-Body Problem, which refers to a physics puzzle about how objects move under gravity. The first season, with eight episodes, launched on Netflix on March 21, 2024.

The story follows a diverse group of characters, mostly scientists, who discover an alien civilization. This discovery brings many dangers and forces big changes for humanity. Unlike earlier adaptations of the books, which were mostly in Mandarin, this Netflix series is mostly in English and includes settings outside China, especially the UK.

This series marks the first TV project for Benioff and Weiss since Game of Thrones ended in 2019. Critics have praised the show for its strong cast, big ideas, and high-quality production. It even earned six Primetime Emmy Award nominations, including one for Outstanding Drama Series. Netflix renewed it for both a second and third season in May 2024.

The main cast includes Jovan Adepo as Dr. Saul Durand, a research assistant; John Bradley as Jack Rooney, an entrepreneur; Rosalind Chao and Zine Tseng playing Dr. Ye Wenjie at different ages, an astrophysicist whose choices threaten humanity; Liam Cunningham as Thomas Wade, head of MI6 and a global intelligence agency; and Eiza González as Dr. Augustina “Auggie” Salazar, a nanotechnologist. Jess Hong plays Dr. Jin Cheng, a physicist; Marlo Kelly is Tatiana Haas, a devoted follower of the alien civilization called San-Ti; Alex Sharp is Dr. Will Downing, a physics teacher diagnosed with cancer; Sea Shimooka voices Sophon, an alien intelligence platform; Saamer Usmani plays Prithviraj Varma, a Navy officer and Jin’s boyfriend; Benedict Wong is Clarence “Da” Shi, an MI6 officer; and Jonathan Pryce plays Mike Evans, a friend of Ye Wenjie who supports the aliens’ cause.

The series is shaping up to be a major sci-fi event, blending complex ideas with a gripping story and a strong cast. With season two now filming and new actors joining, fans have a lot to look forward to.
