Apple TV+ is working on a new limited-series version of the 2006 romantic comedy The Holiday, according to a source who spoke with The Hollywood Reporter. The original movie, directed by Nancy Meyers, starred Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, and Jack Black. It was a hit, pulling in over $205 million worldwide at the box office.

But Meyers herself isn’t part of this new project and was caught off guard when she heard about it. “News to me,” she posted on Instagram. “Imagine my surprise when I opened Instagram and this was the first post I saw.

The new series will be written and executive produced by Krissie Ducker, who previously worked as a writers’ assistant on the show Catastrophe. Rob Delaney, also from Catastrophe, is on board as a consultant. If the series gets the final go-ahead, it’ll mark a return to Apple TV+ for Delaney, who starred in the first season of Bad Monkey.

The show will focus on new characters, following a similar setup to the movie: a single American woman and a single British woman swap homes for the holidays and, naturally, find romance along the way. No actors have been cast yet for these roles. The original Holiday movie, released in 2006, told the story of Iris, played by Kate Winslet, and Amanda, played by Cameron Diaz.

Both women, dealing with broken hearts, decided to trade homes across the Atlantic during the Christmas season. They ended up finding love with Graham, played by Jude Law, and Miles, played by Jack Black. The film also featured supporting actors like Eli Wallach, Shannyn Sossamon, Edward Burns, and Rufus Sewell. Filmed in California and England, it was released by Columbia Pictures in North America and Universal Pictures overseas. It hit theaters in the U.S. on December 8, 2006, after a New York City premiere and made $63 million domestically and $142 million internationally.

Despite its box office success, the movie got mixed reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a 51% approval rating, with critics calling it sweet but predictable. “While it’s certainly sweet and even somewhat touching, The Holiday is so thoroughly predictable that audiences may end up opting for an early check-out time,” the site’s consensus says. Metacritic gave it a 52 out of 100, based on 31 reviews, suggesting average feedback. Still, audiences loved it, giving it an A− grade through CinemaScore.

Over time, the movie has become a fan favorite, often called a Christmas classic, and has built a cult following, especially during the holiday season. Interestingly, Nancy Meyers didn’t plan for The Holiday to be a holiday-focused film, but it’s become a go-to watch every Christmas.

The new Apple TV+ series aims to capture that same romantic, feel-good vibe with a fresh story. While details are still coming together, the project is generating buzz as fans of the original wait to see how this new take will compare.
