Sydney Sweeney, best known for her role in Euphoria, is now making headlines for her political affiliation. According to voter registration records from the Florida Department of State, reviewed by Newsweek and other media outlets, Sweeney has been a registered member of the Republican Party in Florida since June 14, 2024. These records show she is an active voter in Monroe County.

The news comes as Sweeney is in the middle of a separate controversy over her new American Eagle advertisement. The ad features her saying, “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color… my jeans are blue.” The campaign uses wordplay between “genes” and “jeans,” but many online critics say the message is loaded with racial undertones.

Some viewers accused the ad of echoing eugenics themes, pointing to Sweeney’s blonde hair, blue eyes, and white appearance as part of the visual message. A viral TikTok by user @thealtperspective, which has been viewed nearly 2 million times, described the commercial as “literally an ad FULL of racist and fascist dog whistles.”

Fashion advocate Dr. Brett Staniland told Newsweek the ad has “sparked backlash for multiple reasons — firstly the terminology and its inferences suggest a connection to Sydney Sweeney’s appearance being perfect, denoting her blonde hair, blue eyes and white skin.”

Not everyone agrees with that interpretation. White House Communications Director Steven Cheung dismissed the accusations, calling them “dense liberal thinking” and “cancel culture run amok.”

The topic first caught attention when a post on X from user @time222smoke claimed that Sweeney was a registered Republican. BuzzFeed then reported on the claim after checking the public records themselves. The timing of her registration and the controversy over the American Eagle ad has led many people online to connect the two.

This isn’t the first time Sweeney has faced political scrutiny. In 2022, she shared photos from her mother’s 60th birthday party, where some guests wore MAGA-style hats and Blue Lives Matter clothing. At the time, she defended the celebration, saying, “An innocent celebration for my mom’s milestone 60th birthday has turned into an absurd political statement, which was not the intention. Please stop making assumptions.”

So far, Sweeney has not commented on her political registration or the latest backlash.

Despite the online criticism, the American Eagle campaign appears to be doing well for the brand. Reports say the company’s stock rose by about 4 percent after the ad’s launch. That suggests the controversy hasn’t hurt the retailer’s bottom line, and might even be helping it by keeping the campaign in the public conversation.

Whether Sweeney will speak out about her political views remains to be seen. For now, the discussion about her voter registration and the ad’s message continues to spread quickly on social media, with strong opinions on both sides. The mix of politics, celebrity culture, and fashion marketing has put her right in the middle of a heated online debate.
