Few people in Hollywood would have bet that a nearly three-hour, R-rated adaptation of an ancient Greek poem would become a cultural phenomenon. Yet Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ has spent months proving the skeptics wrong, drawing crowds well after its summer premiere. Its box office story is now one of the most remarkable theatrical runs in recent memory.

The film opened in North America on July 17 with a $123 million domestic debut. It stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, alongside Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Charlize Theron and Robert Pattinson. It is also the first feature shot entirely with IMAX cameras, which helped turn it into a must-see event for large-format audiences.

Now that run is heading toward a close, and the final tally is shaping up to be historic. ‘The Odyssey’ is projected to end its theatrical run with roughly $1.8 billion globally, cementing its place as the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.

The R-rated crown changed hands in August. In the week of August 20, the film passed ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ which ended its 2024 run at $1.338 billion, after reaching $1.352 billion worldwide. Ryan Reynolds, who starred in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ publicly congratulated the cast and crew of ‘The Odyssey’ on the milestone.

By then it was already only the third R-rated movie ever to top $1 billion, joining ‘Joker’ ($1.07 billion). ‘Oppenheimer,’ Nolan’s previous R-rated hit, finished around $983 million. The film has kept climbing since, putting daylight between it and every other R-rated title.

The pace of the early run was startling. ‘The Odyssey’ crossed $1 billion after just 3 weeks, with $429.65 million domestically and $578.8 million internationally, and it did so before opening in China. It was the fifth movie of the year to reach that mark, and Nolan’s first since ‘The Dark Knight Rises.’

A few days later it became Nolan’s biggest movie ever, passing the $1.08 billion that ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ earned in 2012. It also became IMAX’s highest-grossing release of all time. Universal noted that it became the 12th highest-grossing film ever at one point in its run, and it has since moved up further.

Box office tracking puts the worldwide total at about $1.79 billion, with $625 million from North America and $1.17 billion from international markets. The domestic figure is now barely moving. On the weekend of October 23 to 25, the film ranked 19th with just $282,000, down 50% from the previous frame.

The numbers also show how far it has come against its $250 million budget. A Forbes analysis earlier put its break-even point at somewhere between $625 million and $750 million, so the film is far into profit territory for Universal.

The film’s staying power is notable. It posted a second-weekend drop of just 30% and went on to generate a domestic multiplier of about 5.1 times its opening weekend. That kind of leg is rare for a blockbuster of this size, especially one that runs 173 minutes and carries an R rating.

Awards chatter has also stayed alive. Reports have placed it in the Best Picture conversation, a sign that its success is not limited to the box office alone. It’s also helping Hollywood, since ‘The Odyssey’ and ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ were expected to lift domestic ticket sales above $4 billion this summer.

For Nolan, the numbers are a career high. His movies have now grossed a combined $7 billion globally, and one outlet argued that he essentially has a blank check for his next project, just as he did after ‘Oppenheimer.’ Three years ago, ‘Oppenheimer’ became his first R-rated film in more than 20 years, and he has now topped that success.

His latest film has also reshaped expectations for what an R-rated release can do. If the projected finish holds, it will sit among the biggest box office hits ever made.

What do you think is the biggest reason behind ‘The Odyssey’s’ massive box office success?
