It’s been more than six years since the final season of Game of Thrones aired, but fans are still talking about it, and now they’re digging up funny old moments from the cast. When it first aired, season eight didn’t exactly land the way earlier seasons did. While fans and critics loved the show for years, the final episodes got a much more mixed reaction. Rotten Tomatoes even ranks it as the lowest-rated season of the series.

Some praised the acting, the production quality, and the music, but many weren’t happy about how short it was or the creative choices made for certain characters.

Still, the final season made history at the Emmys, scoring 32 nominations, the most ever for a single season of television, and winning 12 awards, including Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Supporting Actor for Peter Dinklage.

Some of the cast have been open about their feelings toward the ending. Emilia Clarke, who played Daenerys Targaryen, said that reading her final scenes was tough. She recalled meeting Beyoncé after season eight was filmed and thinking, “Oh, my God, my absolute idol in life is saying that she likes me, and I know for a fact that by the end of this season she’s going to hate me… All I wanted to scream was ‘Please, please still like me even though my character turns into a mass-killing dictator!’”

Clarke said she was shocked by Daenerys’s turn and wished there had been more quiet, emotional scenes between characters like Daenerys and Missandei or Daenerys and Cersei.

Kit Harington, who played Jon Snow, told reporters at the time that he felt protective of the show. He said, “Whatever critic spends half an hour writing about this season and makes their [negative] judgment on it, in my head they can go f**** themselves… If people feel let down by [this final season], I don’t give a f***— because everyone tried their hardest.” Harington admitted he thought the ending would divide fans and was disappointed Jon didn’t kill the Night King, though he called it “a really great twist” for Maisie Williams’s character Arya.

Nathalie Emmanuel, who played Missandei, said she was heartbroken when she read how her character died. “I think the fact that she died in chains when she was a slave her whole life, that for me was a pungent cut for that character,” she told Entertainment Weekly. She also said she wished she had more scenes with Daenerys or Cersei to show her character’s brilliance before her death.

Conleth Hill, who played Varys, said he was “bummed” by how little his character got to do in the last two seasons. Lena Headey, who played Cersei, admitted she had “mixed” feelings about her death scene at first, but later decided it worked as an ending for both Cersei and Jaime. Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams both wished their characters had more interaction with Cersei before the end.

Other cast members, like Gwendoline Christie and Joe Dempsie, shared their own disappointments but also defended how much work went into the season. Even Charles Dance and Natalia Tena, who had left the show earlier, were open about their mixed feelings on how it all wrapped up.

Despite all the divided opinions, one thing remains clear: the Game of Thrones cast worked hard to bring the final season to life, and looking back now, fans are finding humor in how the actors dodged questions about it before it aired. Those reactions might be just as legendary as the show itself.
