The live-action “One Piece” series on Netflix took the world by storm when it premiered on August 31, 2023. Fans and critics loved it, praising the cast, the writing, the visual effects, and how well it stayed true to the original manga and anime.

Many even called it one of the best live-action anime adaptations ever made. It became Netflix’s most-watched show in the second half of 2023, beating every other series season.

Only two weeks after season one dropped, Netflix renewed “One Piece” for a second season. Now, the first look at season two has finally been revealed, giving fans a glimpse of what’s next for Luffy and the Straw Hat crew.

Filming for the new season started in June 2024 and is expected to wrap by December 2025, with the premiere set for 2026.

The second season is introducing a wave of new characters straight from Eiichiro Oda’s manga. In September 2023, Oda himself teased Tony Tony Chopper in a video celebrating the renewal. Later, Iñaki Godoy, who plays Luffy, dropped another teaser in May 2024 while celebrating his character’s birthday, hinting at the arrival of Mr. 3.

The casting announcements have been nonstop. Daniel Lasker, Camrus Johnson, Jazzara Jaslyn, and David Dastmalchian are joining as Mr. 9, Mr. 5, Miss Valentine, and Mr. 3. Clive Russell will play Crocus, Brendan Murray is Brogy, and Werner Coetser is Dorry. Callum Kerr is stepping in as Smoker, Julia Rehwald as Tashigi, Rob Colletti as Wapol, and Ty Keogh as Dalton. Katey Sagal will portray Dr. Kureha after earlier talks with Jamie Lee Curtis fell through due to scheduling conflicts.

Mark Harelik will be Dr. Hiruluk, and Sendhil Ramamurthy will play Nefertari Cobra. Charithra Chandran has been cast as Miss Wednesday, Joe Manganiello as Mr. 0, and Lera Abova as Miss All Sunday. Mikaela Hoover is lending her voice to Chopper.

Even more names have been confirmed: Sophia Anne Caruso as Miss Goldenweek, Mark Penwill as Chess, Anton David Jeftha as K.M., Rigo Sanchez as Dragon, Yonda Thomas as Igaram, and James Hiroyuki Liao as Ipponmatsu.

Tomorrow Studios CEO Marty Adelstein shared that the scripts for season two were finished as early as September 2023, but filming had to wait for the SAG-AFTRA strike to end. Becky Clements, president of Tomorrow Studios, said they’ve had “thorough conversations” about the second season with Netflix, Shueisha, and Oda himself.

They’ve also had lighter talks about future seasons, with plenty of source material to keep going. “With over 1,080 manga chapters, there’s enough for at least twelve seasons,” Adelstein explained.

Joe Tracz has joined as writer, executive producer, and co-showrunner alongside Matt Owens, who returns after leading season one.

The first look at season two promises more adventure, bigger battles, and even wilder moments for the Straw Hats. With so many new faces and storylines, the Grand Line is about to get a lot more exciting.
