Jay Kelly is a coming-of-age comedy-drama written by Baumbach and Emily Mortimer. The story follows a well-known actor named Jay Kelly, played by Clooney, who sets off on a trip across Europe with his longtime manager Ron, played by Sandler. As they travel, they think about their choices, their families, and the paths they’ve taken in life.
The film also stars Laura Dern as Jay’s publicist Liz and Billy Crudup as an old acting buddy who never had his big break. Grace Edwards plays Jay’s youngest daughter, Riley Keough plays his eldest, and Stacy Keach appears as his father.
Jim Broadbent plays a late director who once gave Jay his big break. Greta Gerwig plays Ron’s wife. The large supporting cast also includes Emily Mortimer, Patrick Wilson, Nicôle Lecky, Eve Hewson, Alba Rohrwacher, Isla Fisher, and many more.
Baumbach first announced the project in December 2023, with Clooney and Sandler already attached. According to Netflix, filming began in March 2024 and took place in New York City, London, and Tuscany.
The movie was shot on 35mm film by Swedish cinematographer Linus Sandgren, marking his first collaboration with Baumbach. Editing is by Valerio Bonelli, and the music is composed by Nicholas Britell.
Amy Pascal and David Heyman produced the movie through Pascal Pictures and Heyday Films. By March 2024, Dern, Crudup, and Keough had joined the cast, followed by Broadbent, Gerwig, Fisher, and others.
The film will premiere in competition at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival on August 28, 2025, where it is up for the Golden Lion. It will also screen at the New York Film Festival. A limited theatrical release begins on November 14 before it lands on Netflix worldwide on December 5.
