Liam Neeson’s 2008 action-thriller Taken is now streaming on Hulu, having been added to the platform this August. The movie, directed by Pierre Morel and written by Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen, stars Neeson as Bryan Mills, a former CIA agent who must rescue his kidnapped teenage daughter and her friend from human traffickers in France.

Taken was first released in France on February 27, 2008. While critics gave it mixed reviews, the film was a big hit with audiences, earning $226 million worldwide on a $25 million budget. Many media outlets have said Taken marked a major turning point in Neeson’s career, helping him become known as an action star. The film also launched a franchise, including two sequels and a television series.

On Rotten Tomatoes, Taken holds a 60% rating from 178 reviews, with an average score of 5.8 out of 10. The site’s summary reads, “Taken is undeniably fun with slick action, but is largely a brainless exercise.” Meanwhile, Metacritic gives it a score of 50 out of 100, based on 32 critic reviews, which means the film received mixed or average feedback.

One of the most famous parts of the movie is the “Taken speech,” where Neeson’s character talks tough to the kidnappers on the phone. This scene became an internet meme, even though Neeson himself called it “corny. It was a cornball. I really did feel that.”

Following the success of the first film, Fox announced in 2010 that EuropaCorp would produce a sequel directed by Olivier Megaton. Taken 2 was released in France on October 3, 2012, with Neeson and other original cast members returning. The third movie came out on December 16, 2014, continuing the story of Bryan Mills and his fight to protect his family.

Now that Taken is available on Hulu, fans can enjoy the thrilling story that made Liam Neeson a top action star.
