Netflix’s Surprise Hit, Called the Streamer’s “Frozen,” Is Coming to Theaters for a Sing-Along Event
Since its release on Netflix in late June, KPop Demon Hunters has quickly become a huge hit. This animated musical fantasy, produced by Sony Pictures Animation, tells the story of a K-pop girl group called Huntr/x.
These three members don’t just perform, they also secretly work as demon hunters. Their mission to protect souls gets complicated when a rival boy band, the Saja Boys, turns out to be demons themselves.
The movie’s unique mix of music, fantasy, and Korean culture has struck a chord with viewers worldwide. Songs like Your Idol and Golden have climbed music charts and sparked conversations about the film’s chances at the Oscars. Because of its popularity, KPop Demon Hunters has landed on Netflix’s Top 10 Most Popular List, reaching number 4 with over 158 million views, according to Netflix data.
What’s exciting for fans is that KPop Demon Hunters is getting a rare theatrical release, but only for a special sing-along event. Fandango’s showtimes show screenings set for August 23 and 24. It’s not yet clear if these showings will be extended or expanded, and tickets have not gone on sale yet. The event will take place in select theaters, giving fans a chance to experience the film in a new way outside of streaming.

The movie was directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, who also helped write the screenplay with Danya Jimenez and Hannah McMechan. Kang came up with the story, inspired by her Korean heritage, mixing mythology, demonology, and K-pop culture. The film features voices from Arden Cho, Ahn Hyo-seop, May Hong, Ji-young Yoo, and others, including big names like Daniel Dae Kim and Ken Jeong.
Sony Pictures Imageworks handled the animation, with a style influenced by concert lighting, music videos, anime, and Korean dramas. The soundtrack stands out, too, featuring original songs by various artists and a score by Marcelo Zarvos.
Since it dropped on Netflix on June 20, 2025, KPop Demon Hunters has been praised for its vibrant animation, cool visual style, strong voice acting, funny and emotional story, and of course, its music. The soundtrack itself became a hit, making it into the top ten on several music and streaming charts.
KPop Demon Hunters isn’t just another animated movie, it’s a fresh, exciting blend of culture and fantasy that’s captured the attention of viewers everywhere. With its upcoming sing-along theatrical event, the film’s success is only growing.
