First Look Photos Released as Greta Gerwig’s ‘Narnia’ Receives Key Production Update
Filming for Greta Gerwig’s new Narnia movie has officially begun in London, and fans are already buzzing about the star-studded cast and fresh updates from the set. The film features big names like Daniel Craig, Meryl Streep, Emma Mackey, and Carey Mulligan.
Netflix secured the rights to the entire Narnia series back in 2018, marking the first time one company held all the rights to C.S. Lewis’s classic books. Production company Entertainment One also joined the project, with Mark Gordon, Douglas Gresham, and Vincent Sieber serving as executive producers.
In 2019, Matthew Aldrich, known for co-writing Coco, was brought on to help shape the adaptation. Then in 2023, it was announced that Greta Gerwig would write and direct at least two Narnia films for Netflix.
Gerwig’s adaptation is set to release first in IMAX theaters on Thanksgiving Day 2026 and then will hit Netflix in December that same year. Casting calls in 2025 suggested that the movie would focus on either The Magician’s Nephew or The Silver Chair. By early 2025, production listings confirmed the project as Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew.
Producer Amy Pascal said filming was expected to start around July 2025, with Shepperton Studios in Surrey named as one of the main filming locations.
Fans have already spotted several set photos online, giving clues about the story’s new look. Interestingly, the film’s setting appears to have shifted from the book’s original late 19th-century Victorian era to the 1950s. One Instagram user who visited the set spotted props like a flower stall dated to 1955. When asked, crew members only confirmed it was a Netflix movie, keeping details under wraps.

This change in time period could affect the future of the Narnia series, especially since The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is closely tied to World War II in the books. If this new time setting sticks, it might mean that the events in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe could be updated to the early 2000s.
So far, confirmed casting includes Emma Mackey as the White Witch and Daniel Craig as Uncle Andrew. Carey Mulligan is reportedly in talks for a role, and many expect Meryl Streep to play Aslan, though Netflix has not officially announced any cast members yet. On set, Greta Gerwig has been spotted alongside two young actors thought to be playing Digory Kirke and Polly Plummer, following an extensive casting search.
Filming is happening mainly around the South and Southeast of England, with Shepperton Studios being a key location. While there’s no official end date for filming, it’s likely to wrap up by early 2026.
The Worldwide Guide to Movie Locations has shared pictures of posters around the filming area, including those advertising local spots like The Northfield Club and Steapleton Empire. These posters add to the period feel, promoting music, theater, and boxing events typical of the era.
As more news comes in, we’ll keep updating with all the latest on Greta Gerwig’s Narnia and what fans can expect from this exciting new take on the beloved series.
