Eiichiro Oda Confirms He Handpicked The Cast For Live-Action ‘One Piece’ Including Season 2
Netflix has given fans a lot to talk about when it comes to the live-action One Piece. Not only did they drop the first look at Season 2, but they also confirmed that Season 3 is already in the works. That news alone had the One Piece community buzzing, as everyone is eager to see where Luffy and the Straw Hat crew will head next.
But the excitement hasn’t come without drama. Right after the teaser for Season 2 came out, some people began complaining about the casting. Social media filled with posts saying the show had “gone woke” and that some roles were poorly cast.
Season 2 will be introducing a lot of new characters from the One Piece world, including Marines, Baroque Works members, pirates, and others from the upcoming arcs. The cast list is packed. Callum Kerr is playing Smoker, with Matthew Leck appearing as a younger version of him. Julia Rehwald will be Tashigi, and James Hiroyuki Liao will take on Ipponmatsu. Rigo Sanchez is playing Dragon, while Clive Russell is Crocus. Daniel Lasker will be Mr. 9, Charithra Chandran will be Miss Wednesday, and Aroop Shergill will play her younger self.
The Baroque Works group will also include Yonda Thomas as Igaram, Camrus Johnson as Mr. 5, Jazzara Jaslyn as Miss Valentine, Lera Abova as Miss All Sunday, David Dastmalchian as Mr. 3, and Sophia Anne Caruso as Miss Goldenweek.

Other characters joining are Brendan Murray and Werner Coetser as the giant pirate captains Brogy and Dorry. For the Drum Island arc, Rob Colletti will play Wapol, Mark Penwill will be Chess, Anton David Jeftha will play K.M., Ty Keogh will be Dalton, Katey Sagal will take on Dr. Kureha, and Mark Harelik will be Dr. Hiruluk.
Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece, has made it clear that he personally approved every casting choice for the live-action series. Oda said, “They were absolutely the perfect choice!!!” His direct involvement has given many fans hope that the show will stay true to the manga, despite the online backlash.

Production for Season 2 began in South Africa in June 2024, and Netflix announced on July 1, 2024, that filming was officially underway. Shooting wrapped on December 15, 2024, and on February 4, 2025, Netflix confirmed the season was fully finished. They even released a fresh image of Luffy and the crew in Loguetown.
Season 3 is already confirmed, and with Oda’s approval on the cast, the live-action One Piece looks set to keep sailing forward. Season 2 is planned to premiere in 2026.
