Jennifer Aniston Comments on Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie Love Triangle
Jennifer Aniston has opened up about one of the most talked-about chapters of her life: the so-called “love triangle” with her ex-husband Brad Pitt and his now-ex-wife Angelina Jolie.
The “Friends” star shared her thoughts in a Vanity Fair profile published Monday, giving rare insight into a time that she calls deeply vulnerable. “It was … such a vulnerable time,” Aniston told the outlet. “Journalism back then felt more like a form of a sport.”
Aniston, 56, and Pitt, 61, were married from 2000 to 2005. Shortly after their divorce, Pitt met Jolie, 50, on the set of the 2005 movie “Mr. and Mrs. Smith.” Pitt and Jolie stayed together until 2016, when she filed for divorce.
Reflecting on the media frenzy surrounding her breakup and the subsequent relationship between Pitt and Jolie, Aniston told Vanity Fair, “There’s obviously some PTSD we all have, which is why these [interviews] scare me.” She added, “How are they going to misinterpret my words or take something out of context? And one line nowadays …”
After Pitt left Aniston, rumors about her love life and whether she wanted children became tabloid fodder. “It was such juicy reading for people. If they didn’t have their soap operas, they had their tabloids,” Aniston said.
“It’s a shame that it had to happen, but it happened. And boy did I take it personally.” Vanity Fair notes that Aniston calls this period her “love triangle” years. She said the advice she gave herself back then was simple: “Just pick yourself up by the bootstraps and keep on walking, girl.”
Aniston admitted that being constantly in the headlines affected her deeply. “I didn’t have a strong enough constitution to not get affected by it,” she said. “We’re human beings, even though some people don’t want to believe we are. They think, You signed up for it, so you take it. But we really didn’t sign up for that.”
After Pitt, Aniston had public relationships with John Mayer and Vince Vaughn, before her romance with Justin Theroux, whom she married in 2015 and divorced in 2018. Pitt married Jolie in 2014, and the couple has six children, three biological and three adopted.
Their marriage ended after a highly publicized dispute in 2016, which led to a long custody battle. The pair finally settled their divorce in December 2024, five years after being legally single. Pitt has since been linked to Ines de Ramon.
Aniston has also built close friendships outside of Hollywood. Her friend Jason Bateman told Vanity Fair that she is like a “co-mom” to his children, while she remains close to Gwyneth Paltrow, who dated Pitt in the 1990s. “Oh, of course. How can we not? We’re girls,” Aniston said when asked if she talks about their mutual ex.
Through it all, Aniston has shown resilience, balancing a demanding career with the intense scrutiny of the tabloids, and emerging stronger from one of the most public chapters of her personal life.
